Hi thingy. I respect your opinion on the subject, hey, dissent makes the world go round. It's all good. No worries.
I just wanted to bring to your attention though that West "By God" Virginia has some of the most lenient carry laws in the U.S., besides Vermont and Alaska (they don't require a permit to carry on your person).
You don't have to "register" a firearm, nor give any information as to what you own or will be carrying. I also wanted to add that although I can legally carry in almost all of the States, I rarely, and I mean rarely, carry on my person. I (like many others out there) have the permit because it allows me to have a gun in my vehicle. In Florida (where I moved from recently), you don't have to have a CCW to put a pistol in your glove compartment, whether or not loaded, as long as it's "securely encased". In Alabama however, you must have a permit (concealed weapon permit, CCW) to have a pistol in your vehicle. If you get pulled over and a routine search reveals it, you are in hot water. So, when I moved here, although my Florida CCW reciprocates and makes it legal for me to have a gun in my truck, I went to see the local Sheriff and he ran a check, issued me my permit. It's just all about legality. That's all. I'm no John Wayne walking around Wally Mart with my .357 in my back pocket, no way. But, I'll be damned if I won't have protection from some crackhead arsehole who tries to commit a violent felony on my wife, myself or **** anyone for that matter, while in my presence.
The background check in Florida is one of the most extensive in the U.S. That's why almost every State in the Union honors it. You are fingerprinted, and your prints and SSN go through both the State and the ATF to see if you are not a criminal. Does this preclude would be criminals from getting permits as long as they are "clean" at the time of application? No. However, statistics show that people who have permits are law abiding and quite cooperative to law enforcement when stopped.
I have been pulled over on I-10 heading to Jacksonville, FL before by a smokey bear hat wearing trooper. In my door console, I had my .45. I told him as soon as he walked up to the truck that I was packing. He asked for it, I obliged, he set it atop my truck out of my reach, asked for my Driver License, told me to slow down, gave me my pistola back and said have a nice day. He didn't ask me for a permit, because in Florida you don't need one as long as it's securely encased. It wouldn't fit in my glove box and he knew it. It was in an "uncle mikes" case zipped up. End of story.
If that had been in Alabama, I would have had to produce a CCW, or probably go to jail. I just don't need the hassle, nor the embarrassment, nor my security clearance revoked for being stupid.
Like I said in the beginning, I appreciate your patriotic way of thinking. ****, I gave this country 20 years and 10 days of the prime of my life. I'm with you, but you can't always beat the man, most times you have to play the game.
The NRA fights every day for our 2nd amendment rights. Becoming a member is easy and relatively cheap. If nothing else, most members think exactly like you do (I for one) that Uncle Sam needs to chill out on gun control.
I'll get off my soapbox now, most will have got bored with my post long before reading my signoff anyhow...............
