Political Correctness on TBN?

/ Political Correctness on TBN? #11
Everyone I know is not politically correct, including me. Yet they can't express that politically incorrectness in any public setting without someone coming down on them. this forum included.

Can you call that is anything other than censorship?

Nobody likes to be censured. Nobody likes to be sued. Allowing some Brand bashing can get the Moderators sued. It is a trade-off.

The vast amount of good information and advice on this board will keep me coming back.

The owner of this site provides us with a great place to discuss tractors and related topics. He runs this site, and we get to use it at no cost to us. It is his right to control the content of this site any way he sees fit.

I happen to think it's refreshing to visit a site and not have to be concerned with members bashing each other over politics and other issues. If a post is removed once in a while, what's the big deal? If you're visiting someone else's site, you have to follow the rules that are established for that site. Even free speech has it limits. Is it OK to yell "FIre!" in a crowded movie theatre?

Rich I thought that was well said and represents exactly the way I feel.

It seem to come up often that some here feel their free speech rights are being violated if they can't say whatever they want on this forum. I don't get it. Of course you have the right to say whatever you want in your own home. That is freedom of speech. Whenever you go to a public venue, courthouse, airport or movie theater, you are required to follow the rules of the venue. Don't try to yell "Bomb" at an airport or "Fire" at a theater, you will go to jail. That is adhering to the rules of the venue you chose to be in. Not a violation of free speech.

It is the same thing here. The owners have established guidelines for the forum that are outlined in the membership agreement. It has worked well for the decade I have been a member. If it is too restrictive for those who feel repressed, I would have to ask why do you stay?

Just my opinion,

Is it just me or have others noticed alot of people mentioning in the threads that posts have been removed due to brand bashing, argumentive type posts and one I saw was due to a stick figure sticker?

I realize members can't post curse words or things of that nature but come on TBN where is our free speech, are we going to be like Ebay soon and not be allowed to discuss firearms or things that aren't all warm and fuzzy?

Just my .02 worth, This thread will probably be removed as well

This isn't a "public" forum, IMO. It is set up and run by people (not the Gov't) who have some values that they want to see preserved for the benefit of other posters. I don't see this as a violation of "freedom of speech". Just being decent and respectful. Some have problems with that, and think that is their freedom. My $.02

Well guys here's the way I see it.

..............

BTW---I'm the least PC person that you'll ever meet...However, there's a time and place for everything.

Well said, and being wise enough to know where those places are is smart, IMO :)

Usually I don't discuss moderation publicly, but after a heavily brand-opinionated thread sprouts up I think it's relevant to explain why we remove messages.

In the case of "brand bashing," we remove messages and threads to maintain a standard of quality in the forums, as well as to protect members from potential legal exposure. We don't have to do this, but what some people may not realize or think of when posting something online is that if a company or person chooses to pursue legal action over comments posted online (that may be read by thousands of people in a very short period of time), the poster (author) will be liable for those words (libelous or slanderous). TBN and a poster's ISP could be subpoenaed for records that would trace specific posts to the true identities of posters, thus removing any veil of online anonymity.

While it hasn't happened on TBN, there are countless cases of internet discussion posters being sued by parties (both companies and individuals) who felt that the content posted was libelous.

So, while it may seem like "censorship" we're actually doing people a favor by taking an unbiased look at content and removing it when we feel it could be problematic or expose our members to legal action. That's something we don't want to see, for us or for any of our members.

Legal issues aside, there are two sides to every story and when brand, product or dealer bashing comes up I don't think it's particularly fair; discussions typically look at just one side of the story, and people jump to conclusions, opinions and statements based on what ultimately is merely one person's version of a story. While level-headed members may speculate that there could be more to the story, that doesn't stop potentially damaging messages from being posted. And it's my decision that those will be removed. That's been the law of the land here since 1998, and it's a rule that is enforced consistently. Doesn't matter which brand or which company (or dealer).

I think you would be hard pressed to find any website online with the amount of members and traffic that TBN has that allows completely unmoderated discussion and company bashing. And if that's what you want to do, I'd recommend you find somewhere else to do it.

As for the moderation frequency ... I have answered this question before as well. There are 1.8 million posts here, the vast majority being on-topic tractor discussions. Over the years, I have kept track of how many posts are moderated and the average has always been about 5 messages out of every 1,000. In 2009, that number was once again 5 per 1,000, or 1/2 of 1%.

In an ideal world, we would never remove any messages at all... and perhaps the day the "notify moderator" messages stop coming in, we won't have to. ;)

Thanks for all you and the moderators do.
This is one of my top 3 favorite sites I must say, the other two have nothing to do with tractors or rural stuff:)

And yeah- I've had a couple of posts removed along with explanations from the mods that did it, I'm ok with that, well except for one where the moderator was all wet, but I let it go.;)
Now some sites I've been on remove stuff without comment and, frankly, that bothers me.

Good job overall I say:D

Well there is the ole saying, "If ya don't like it, don't go to it!"
I have noticed sometimes what is right or wrong/excepted differs. I have seen some post that should have been deleted while another stays. Again though it is up to the mods what is allowed{???}
