Poor brush hog performance

The cut quality with my JD LX6 is definitely better when the grass is not too dry. Mowed really dry, tall (gone to seed) grass yesterday and the cut was patchy and some of it would stand back up. When a little damper this does not happen.

I also noticed that lower rpms made this worse and dropping down a gear for higher rpms definitely improves cut quality.

I would check a few things...
Check the fluid in the mower gearcase
Check the pto shaft u-joints and lube them
Check the blades closely
Check radiator screen
check air filter
check air filter dust cup.
check the level/position of the mower; has it changed over the hours?

On my tractor, I have found all of these will add up to lower performance when mowing. I get in to dusty stuff sometimes; I will check the radiator screen and air cleaner dust cup every hour or so; I need a break anyways...

The first time I used my brush hog, I sheared the shear pin, but the internal friction in the coupler transmitted enough torque to the implement to allow it to rotate, but not enough to do any meaningful work.

Perhaps this is what's happening here.

sounds to me like the slip clutch loosened up. Use it for a little while and then carefully check to see how hot it is. If it's slipping, you might not notice as the shaft would still be turning, but it would be slipping more and getting hotter.

Check that slip clutch. It might not be tight enough and its slipping in the tall grass/weeds.

Did you adjust the slip clutch this year? The manual has the procedure, well it should, on how to adjust the slip clutch. On my MX6 I had to talk to JD since they forgot to put the page in the manual.
