Poor Mans Fuel pump

I upgraded my syphon today with a pump with a solid plastic body and a couple of "rubber" hoses. Cost me $8, and with a bit of care, like storin' it outa sunlight, oughta last a lot longer'n them plastic squeeze bulbs.

The web information at the Re-Fuel site doesn't say if it can be used with Diesel, I sent them an email to clarify. I don't see why it wouldn't. I like the idea, even though the max flow is 1.5gpm. I could start the transfer and let it run for 10 minutes.

I remember some of the same concerns voiced by safety police with my post on "air powered sprayer". But, how many of you or your kids have played with those pump up water blaster water guns? Seems to me like the same thing..air pressure to move liquid (pump up and squirt up to 25' or more), but I haven't heard any reports of these chinese plastic pressure vessels blowing up and hurting anyone.

Most folks are really, truly concerned with other folks' well being. The attitude that stupid people deserve what they get shows a real lack of humanity and compassion, in my opinion.

So true. My brother and uncle worked for Fedders compressors in Frederick, MD years ago and they did "hydrostatic" testing of their compressor body's. They would simply fill the cylinder with water, submerge it in a tank of water and preasureize it. When it got to the failure preasure it would just crack. If they had filled them with air they would have been like a bomb going off.

The reason for this is because the water is not very compressable so that when the failure takes place, there is no expansion of the water. Probably just a squirt of water. Air would violently expand propelling any fragments.

My son had an air hog airplane that you had to pump air into a thin clear water bottle looking tank. I was surprised the pressure that the thin plastic tank would store. You pumped this up with a bicycle type pump capable of somewhere around 60psi. I guess if there was a failure, the thin plastic didn't have enough mass to do any damage but I bet it would be loud.

Your calculations showing the amount of pressure exerted to the walls of the barrel are true hydraulic values. The difference is that there is little stored energy at 10 psi for the rapid expansion of the air when the failure takes place. There would be little thrust and I doubt the lid would make it to the ceiling. Another example would be the very large inflatabled trampolines you see at parties with the squirl cage fan supplying a couple of pounds pressure over hundreds of square feet. If the bag were to pop, no one would be injured even though the bag were capable of supporting hundreds of pounds.

Harbor Freight has an air powered barrel pump in their catalog for maybe $69, anybody tried one of these? I too have thought about using air as a pusher but share the concern about compressed air's wild effects on a container, but running a pump instead retires that concern.

They are on sale in last nights flyer for $39 if anyone with a barrel full of fuel wants to give it a try. I don't use enough yet to go that route.

I got a flyer in the mail the other night for in-store sales, don't have it handy, but I'll try and get a stock number... Maybe someone will beat me to it.

Well I'm home now - stock # is 93755, it is 39.99 in the sale flyer, good until 2/12/07, but it shows up as $59 on the web????
12 gpm would fill my tank in about 30 sec, but I would imagine a smaller hose would slow that down a bit...
