At work now but will get it back together and check for looseness. Doppler- could you post a link with a part number from house site to show what you talking bout, I have no idea what to look for.

I agree with Car Doc. looks like someone's been in it. That Pin going through the Ball Can't be Right way to Big Thats IMO now. Also Were the bottom of the "Shift Lever" or the Shaft Looks Awful Shiney "alot of Wear" And thats what Sits in the "Shift lever Guide". That would Create alot of Play not letting the "Shaft" move the "Shifter fork" far enough to Engage the Gears or lock in the Detent. And with the pics. Hard to tell but the "Shift Lever" looks Worn. Hope that makes Sence.:ashamed:

I see what looks like someone has staked the last shift fork with a center punch. I presume to take up clearance (but why?) on what I believe from what I see is the reverse fork.

I think some one was trying to fix the problem previously but not looking for the cause. All the person has done has removed sone of the play. May be some were between 20 to 30 thou.

The middle fork (3-4?) has what looks like quite a bit of off center wear also. I wish I knew how to draw on these pics I would show you what I am talking about.

that is comon on forks in a large number of gear boxes. It just shows the machineing was not perfect.

As to why I cant tell you but looks like if I am seeing what I think someone else has already been in it and that always makes me nervous.

Agree but has not fixed the problem.

I will say this that on non-sycromesh tranys the ball detents in the shift housing on the shift shafts are what hold the trans in gear. They have to be right since there are no syncro clutchs which have shift dogs that have detents in them also. Everything has to run paralel also meanaing no bad main shaft or counter shaft bearings.

Detent in my opinion are not seating as as fork is moving 25% less than it should.

edit: The shifter looks fine btw. I presume it fits the shifter socket snugly? Some tranys have a plastic bushing pushed on the end of the shifters on the small ball and that can cause gears not to be engaged far enough often the plug os lost if some one has removed the gear leaver. Replacement part could be made if unable to be purchased. Just about all japanese cars had this at some time or another. but if it doesn't have one and it fits snug it is for sure ok as long as the shifter seat is good and that is the seat which the larger ball with the pins pivots and sits in and keeps pressure on the big ball with the pins so it doesn't move up and down. (sorry this is hard to explain in detail on 1 dimensional internet. I guess what I am saying is its very likely the shift tower rather than the bottom end better than 50/50 anyway.)

I agree and have added my comments

The top gear housing is allunimum and this will have wear the pins sit in the housing. the pin through the ball will be case harden so shouldn't worry about the pin.

Now take a photo of the housing and show the slots the pin goes into. I would just about bet that the slots are warn as well.

So check the base of the gear leaver to see if the fit is snug. !/32 is too loose.

Guess I will start there since it seems the cheapest and easiest route right now. Will just replace the shift lever, ball, pin , spring etc.. And go from there. Thanks for the aid and I will update when I find out what happens after this.

When you look at the gears in the Pic #0449 you can see the gears aew not sliding all the way into gear.

there could be many reasons for this includung some one didn't asemable the box afer having it apart.

Tale a picture of the top of the forks were the gear leaver goes into the fork housing.

Why as can be seen there is probably no wear in those parts. To me it certainly is something else.

Ah It just hit me 8ball you had motor problems awhile back. Had to check and now I do remember. Your a PO. Dang you got that straightened out your get this figured out. The Parts your planning on replacing is what I would start with and replace also. Went back and checked H. gasket. Still have problems remembering things CRS half the time but getting better. Whatever the cost in parts on this issue will be well worth it.

Cardocs comment about the possible center punch marks on the shift fork prompts me to post this info. The total allowed wear clearance between the shift forks and gear grooves is .040". It is the same on a YM220, 226 and 276. Would strongly guess it would be the same for a YM2000.

Carey you are right about the engine problems. Ended up having a cracked head, yep my typical bad luck. I replaced that, had the engine rebuilt, even put in a new radiator. Now this problem happens. Wish I was more mechanically inclined. Bout ready to give up on this little red machine, lol.

Give up Nah!! Your just getting some Mechanical training. And some good training at that. Not only are you learning your learning how not to work on it from what seems to be typical Ghetto rigging thats the previous owner has done.LOL. You've got all that straightened out and it seems eveyone agrees with were the problem is on the Trans. so your on the right track of getting this fixed. Do it right and it will most likely last another 30+Yrs. and if anything would come up you've about "Been There Done It"and your know exactly what to do and how to repair it.
I abslolutely Love My YM2000 it's my 2Cyl. old man's Toy. I'm definitely a little to old for the 2cyl. motorcycle days thats for sure. I still haven't gotten over the Stroke and 6wks.ICU. from the ATV.
What reminded me of you is I just heard from a family friend on Face Book. Her dad just retired who's from Chicago also DEA. been in AZ. And heard what he has been up to."More than I wanted to know thats for sure" Great Man I Have "Alot" of respect for
Sounds as though your be waiting on parts now. I'll be waiting an wanting to here the outcome thats for sure. Oh! an another reminder from Hoye's tech. site. I still prefer playing for the Money Ball. You see that :laughing:
