All road traffic has been declared stopped as of 4pm. Anyone caught on the road is subject to fines and towing.
We still don't have more than a couple inches here. wind is picking up though.

Have about 4" on the ground here in south central CT. Been snowing lightly since about 8:30 this morning. My outside thermometer is reading 33* now, up from 26* this morning, so it must still be cold aloft. When the winds turn around from the north, the temps are suppose to drop significantly and snow fall rates should be 2"-3" per hour. We're in the 1'-2' predicted range here depending on which forecaster you want to believe, but they also predicted a changeover to mixed rain/snow during the day today, which hasn't happened. Going out for my first run about 5:30 tonight. A cab would be real nice right about now.

Going back to the '78 blizzard, I was a freshman in college. Just as the storm hit, some forward thinking guys brought a few kegs into the dorms (things were a bit more relaxed back then) and classes were cancelled for three days, so we had a three day party. Being young with no responsibilities and no place I had to be, it was fun. The dorms were co-ed too, so that, and the beer, helped the cabin fever. Oh, to be young, single and irresponsible, err, I mean without responsibilities.

Been snowing here since 07:00, we have almost 6" on the ground, snowing lightly now, had a few wind gusts over 25mph, nothing serious yet. Apparently this is the pre-storm storm. We are in the 18-24+" range area, blizzard conditions forecast from 20:00 tonight to 16:00 Saturday. I have an open tractor with FEL and rear blade. Wife was using it a few years ago when I was out of town, she about froze to death... didn't help that she couldn't engage 4wd so it took her longer than it should have to clear things up. First thing I did when I got home was to go out and buy a GMC Sierra 4wd and put a plow on it. Now she runs the heated plow truck and I, freezing, run the open tractor to get our driveways and dirt road cleared up.

I read that about the Mass Governor shutting down all travel in the state. That's amazing; its like a different planet. If he tried that here everyone would laugh at him and get on down the road to whatever business they had to do.

Have you folks with open station ever tried the heated snowmobile suits?

I have to go with grsthegreat on this.

What I have seen (and this is not meant in a pejorative sense, just as an onservation) is that the more urban/suburban the lifestyle, the more dependent upon infrastructure the populace becomes.

I will agree with you as I live in Ct. And presently the snow is falling. But as we may be more dependent in our area our states and municipality's are not equipped for this type of storm as they are not the norm. So in an area like yours where clean up is just another storm here some will go with out the ability to get out of their homes. Cleanup may take several days.

It seems like the IQ might also go down, or at least the common sense. In the country you just don't see folks out unless they have to be in bad weather and no one needs to tell them that. Last night I got a recorded call from my electric utility, about 5 emails from various companies (oil, gas, etc) and every TV station telling me common sense things that I wouldn't have thought anyone would need to be told. Now they're legally mandating it (travel ban). At some point folks have to be able to fend for themselves and have enough common sense to stay out of danger.

Gee, self-reliance. What a novel concept.

Never mind the self reliance they lost the common scene. Bet 1/2 the drivers don't have snow tires and half of them bald tires
