Some members here will regard my following comments as being barbaric, but this is one of the things that we did when I was growing up in the East Tennessee Mountains. There were times when we went Coon hunting, that the dogs failed to tree a Coon or the Coon being chased had crossed the river. During these times, we would "Spotlight" Possums. This method incorporated climbing a tree while someone else shined a powerful spotlight in the Possum's eyes. Then the hunter in the tree would attempt to grab the Possum by the tail and throw it in a burlap bag that he had. After putting several Possums in the bag,you could hear the bones being crushed by the Possums fighting each other. Blood would also be oozing through the burlap. By this time, the dogs would be in a frenzy. We would then toss the burlap sack to the dogs to alleviate their frenzy pangs. Yes, Possums, most definitely, have the capability to hurt someone with their teeth and claws that they possess. BTW, one time I opened the door to our Smokehouse and there was a Coon in the corner. Upon seeing me, it retreated as far in the corner as it could. Then it turned around and crouched or sat on its rear and hissed. My Father told me to back up fast. When a Coon or Possum does this, it is best to leave it alone, because this is their defensive mode and they mean business. Either animal will usually run or go away, if given the chance to escape or leave. Thanks for listening. Relating this story brought back Childhood memories.Dean if that possum had sunk his fangs in your arm, you would have screamed like a little girl!.. Those things can be a nasty customer, and they have some real teeth! I would have loved to see a video of you swinging a possum around
