I am close to buying a BX24. One of the projects I would like to do is installing a four rail horse fence. I do have a couple of questions though:

1. What are the capabilities of a post hole digger on the BX24
2. Any recommendations on a brand if I decide to purchase one

Thanks

Most Cat. 1s will fit, though some of the largest sized U-bars may need to be mounted by opening turn buckles to max width then lifting lift arms to mid-height where you can get full spread to mount the U-bar. Such is the case with my Greene unit from Northern Tool.

Someone, Land Pride I think, has the only unit I know of that comes with down-pressured rear hydraulics and a carbide fishtail bit tip. TBN member Ultrarunner has this unit. If you're going to be augering into hardpan, etc. you will need this as a standard auger and tip without downpressure will not bite into extremely hard material. I have seen a dealer do a custom modification on a Woods unit (for a BX) to give it downpressure, but they did their own plans, etc. & was extra $.

Most typical units will run around $500-$600; the Land Pride with downpressure is about $1800.

Leinbach Line (sp?) has a Cat 1N post hole digger made for the BX series. It is made for the narrower and lower 3PH mounts on earlier BX's. Yours is higher on the BX24 than on the BX23, for example, but your bars are still, techically, Cat 1N rather than full-on Cat 1. No downpressure...a simple unit...but it fits the tractor better than most others.

After using a 3pt auger with worn bits, I think if I was going to consider purchasing an auger, and my machine was too small to handle an FEL mounted unit (many are), I'd go with that hydraulic downpressure unit - it'd be a heck of a lot safer than trying to create downpressure on the cheaper units.

In case you do have adverse conditions to drill through, you might want to read this thread. Drilling thru solid rock without wasting money on hydraulics and not endangering nor even needing a helper.

Also, everybody sells "Pengo" [style] augers with many different interchangable teeth and tips, including flat carbide, serrated carbide and shinny "rock pickers". You may find, as I did, that auger bits from the mfg of the complete PHD may not have cutters that are interchangable with anybody else's and may offer no variety of cutters.

Cheers!

I have a land pride PD10 for ny BX it is made specifically for sub cuts. It works fine in soft ground but to get it to dig in the hard stuff i had to buy carbide tips. I still have to but weight on it to get it to dig in hard clay and it will not dig clitche at all.

I've dug about 30 holes in medium hard material with the digger in the picture without any problems. It is a Rankin 600 which is a Shaver 601.

The key is making sure you get a PHD that will work with your BX.

MY Rhino HPHD won't. It would hardly fit my B2910.

Without question the BX will power a PHD IF...IF...you get one that fits the limited size cat 1 3PH.

Fact of life...the BX 3PH is a bit smaller than standard. OR...all the other Cat 1 3PHs are larger than standard... /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif
