I have a JD4100 and was considering getting a post hole digger. As a homeowner, I occassionally dig some holes. Question, is the post hole digger effective? What brands work and what are costs. Dealer wants from $750-1000 for their brands.

thanks,

They are very effective and sure come in hndy when placeing fenceposts. I do this occassionally and borrow the post hole digger from a neighbor. They are also available from equipment rental stores. In my case it is so seldom used that I don't plan on buying one. And I'd certainly use one before I bought one. It may save you some money.

Carl, read this thread. They work very well, but you really don't need to spend that much money.

O.K. from what I am reading, you can put a post hole digger on a 4100 JD Tractor. I was told by a dealer that it was not advisable. What's the bottom line from you guys who have used a post hole digger on a 4100?

I have a 4100 with a post hole digger from Tractor Supply. I have dug about ten holes since purchasing it. It works fine. I think with auger it cost about $400. I priced a JD unit and could not believe what they wanted. The JD unit may be better but the price is ridiculous. If you were doing a lot of holes, you probably wouldn't be using a 4100 anyway.

My wife thought I was nuts buying a unit for $400. I told her to dig the holes by hand for the fence for her horses. That ended the arguement.

I love it, those darn horses cost us a fortune, but they also let us get the toys we want. LOL

I've checked out the JD post diggers and your right, scare a man to death. Im going to Tractor Supply this weekend and check it out. I have a lot of holes to dig over the next few years so the $400 investment would be worth it. Problem is I have a lot of rock to drill.

Thanks for the info.

Horses? A fortune? How could that be?

This morning I was advised that the vet was on the way to do an ultrasound on a mare due in late May to confirm whether or not she is in foal with twins. Of course, if she is, there may be an expensive procedure available to kill the smaller one to save the larger, but it's pretty late, so more expense and risk than earlier. And -- by the way -- blood tests show some hormone deficiencies that may be correctible with direct injections of money ...
I decided to come to work.
Your post hole digger won't even be able to find a space on the horse financial report. Good luck.

Yea and the worst part besides costing a fortune is half the time you're so dang busy keeping up with all the repairs and building to keep them that you don't have time to even ride!!! Or worse yet for you poor guys that it's your wife that gets all the pleasure from them you have to do all the work and still no fun! /w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif

I've got pretty rocky ground at my place and my TSC Post Hole digger seems to do the trick. I end up pulling up some pretty good sized rocks (6"-8") along with the dirt.

Good Luck! Henry

Dig the holes herself

Yes, that is what I told her.

Of course now she wants a new double oven. When I mentioned there was nothing wrong with the current oven, she said "you try cooking...". That ended the arguement. I'm in trouble now.

With regard to the cost of horses. I have always said that buying the horse is the cheap part.

Mr Ed
I told her to dig the holes by hand for the fence for her horses. That ended the argument.

/w3tcompact/icons/hmm.gif Tried this approach with the better half after reading your post.
She wants a water garden. Told her she could have one if she got me a Backhoe. /w3tcompact/icons/tongue.gif She offered to buy me a shovel instead. She brought home the shovel today. /w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif I still do not have a Backhoe and I don't think she is going to get me to dig a water garden with the shovel. /w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif
Then I read you later post. Sure am glad she got me shovel instead of the Backhoe. /w3tcompact/icons/eyes.gif I don't want to be buying her a new stove for a while. /w3tcompact/icons/crazy.gif
I need a 3PH posthole digger also. /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif But I found I could rent one from my Kubota dealer for $50 bucks a day. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif That should get the 90 holes I need done without any problems.

Boy I can relate. Several years ago when my x-wife and I were showing and rasing horses we had 35 brood mares and it was like they all had problems. LOL Good luck on the mare, Post hole digger minor, vet care major.

I'll join MikePA in the no pleasure arena. All work and I am the last in the pecking order behind three horses/w3tcompact/icons/king.gif, dog and a boarder who seems to live at my house now. It was tough enough to have one wife. At least I have my Deere 4300 and hopefully a backhoe soon/w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif.

Re: Dig the holes herself

Went to Sears over the weekend. They had a sale on double ovens. She is getting he new oven. They will be out Saturday to install it. I hope it improves her cooking!

While I was there, I saw Sears had a good sale on a table saw. I might have to go back and get it. Who said revenge isn't sweet?

Yeah, Hell I hope my wife never reads this site as Wives seem to get mad at us for other guys speaking their respective minds! If we don't disagree or we just laugh they seem to take offense!
