My dad has a KK phd w/ a 12" auger. I am considering a 6" auger (12" seems like overkill) to set some 4x4's. Can I buy any brand auger or are they brand specific?

Thanks,

While we are on this subject.... has anyone heard of or done business with Enlows Tractor and Equipment Auction in Tulsa? I am also looking for a PHD and it looks like Enlows is selling a new Leinbach PHD w/ 6" or 9" augers for $285. And a Howse 5' rotory mower for $385. These prices seem too good to be true. Check it our at http://www.enlow66.com/page2.html

The diagonal measurement of a 4" x 4" is 5.7". So you'd only have a little more than an eigth of an inch clearance.

Just measure the shaft diameter of the auger on the KK. They are usually a standard size. Theres a slim chance it wont be but measure it and then youll be sure.

Youll want a 9 inch for those posts. Not only is the clearance too low with a 6 inch but I have never seen a perfectly straight hole either. The 9 inch gives you some play.

The other thing you should think about is whether you will have rocks where you will be digging. A 6" auger will not eject a very big rock (1"-2";the shank of the auger will be about 3" diameter) and the hole is kinda small if you have use a digging bar to get past (a) rock(s). I think the 6" augers are intended for small metal posts.

Thanks, I had not thought of the diagonal measurement and a perfectly straight hole would be rather rare indeed. There's not a great difference between the 9" and the 12" so maybe I'll just use the 12 and save a couple of bucks. My only thought was to keep as much virgin soil around the post as possible.

Thanks for all the help!!

Enlows has a pretty good reputaion 'round here, (NE Oklahoma) They have been around for a while and price is their game. My Father Out Law was in the business for years and did Kubota before them, so his customers now use them and seems all is OK. Better than another local 'Bota guy (at the time)

Our star is Tulsa New Holland, where Mike McCrate and his gang are fast becoming legendary for super human customer service. (which still leaves a lot of room for Enlow to be pretty darn good...)

Are you in these parts? (OK)

That would appear to be a good price on that Leinbach PHD. Here's a place Marshall Machinery in PA that has it for $425.

Actually, there are two Enlows on hwy 66. One is the dealership and one is the tractor auction. both have good reputations and the dealership does good service work it just takes a while to get your unit back, they seem to be very high volume. The auction runs the first wednesday of every month but the do sales on implements every day and have quite a selection

I told the guy I was planting 4x4's when I bought my digger and he sold me a 9 inch augar. Everyone else I have talked to said that a 9 inch augar was what should be used to plant 4x4's. I think the 9 inch augar will be a little faster to dig and faster to fill than a 12 inch augar, so I guess it depends on how many holes you have to dig.
