I'm doing some fencing over the next few years. Problem I have is that 16 to 20 inches down I hit lime rock. This stops my hand post hole digger completely. Does any one have experience with hydraulic PHD mounted on the bucket of your tractor. Any one use a rock point? This lime rock does break apart, but not by hand.

ralph372, I researched this same question hard back in November and the consensus was that although a skidsteer mounts in front (because they have no choice) the rear of the tractor is better suited for this as with a hydraulic down pressure auger you need lots of weight to keep it on the ground when drilling thru Limestone or solid rock. I ended up with a Beltec hyd auger equiped with a 2" puff drill for tpost and a 12" rock auger. It is a very expensive setup I have around $6,000 in the unit and augers but I can drill a 6' x 12" hole in solid rock in about 15 minutes. Its cool but you better have a lot of holes to do to warrant owning one. Renting around here was an option as well but it was $300+ for a weekend and I've got lots of holes so I bought it to save money and so I could do it at my own pace instead of the hurry up its almost Monday method. By the way if your set on having it mounted in front make sure you get the skidsteer quickattach universal front end, you won't find a hyd auger to mount on the front of a normal tractor loader frame, at least I didn't.

"and a 12" rock auger."

Any pictures? I'd like to see what the auger teeth look like.. I have several places where you go 6 inches down & hit rock shelf. On a few occasions I have just turned the tractor around and dig a big hole w/ the FEL.. beats being on your knees digging rocks out of a 12" hole w/ a crowbar.

Kensfarm, I don't have any pictures yet but heres a link to the beltec site I have the RAD type 12" and a 2" rock puff drill.http://www.belltec.net/augers.html
The only hole I've dug 6' deep was a hole for my hunters outhouse it did a fabulous job but at this point I'm not sure you'd enjoy the picture /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Most of the holes I,ve dug are 3' deep and it truly does the job it was intended for although I will say that I can't imagine doing it with a machine very much smaller than the 90hp machine I'm using as the actual hydraulic unit is a brute to start with and when your drilling thru solid rock the auger puts enough force on my M9000 with solid filled tires weighing in the neighborhood of 12,000lbs to get it rocking from side to side a pretty fair amount. I'm afraid with a smaller machine the auger would be more like riding a wild bull an ability that I cherish but not without chaps, spurs and bull rigging not something I'd want to experience from a tractor seat.
