I need to put in a deer fence. PHD requires to much fill around the posts. Posts need to be 7 feet high but top couple of feet can be light weight. So the cheapest way, maybe is to buy 14' 4x4 cut in half pound in and add light weight extention. Brings me to the post pounder. All the commercial ones are hugh to drive full size posts. I only need to drive a 7 footer 1 1/2 to 2 feet and a 4 x 4 at that. So thinking about building something. I see large weights and a hydraulic lift. Does anyone know how the hydraulic lift lets go? is it mechanical or does it just dump fluid back through the valve?

The size of auger will determine the amount of fill. Get a smaller auger if you can find one.

I used sharpened 3 inch round x 7ft posts and beat them in the ground with the bottom of my full loader bucket! just a thought! pends soils thought! Posts where from tsc for 3.50 per post

Drill some small, 6 or 9 inch, holes and then use pea gravel to back fill them instead of tamping with dirt. They'll be set almost as hard as if you put sackcrete in the holes.
