Looking for someone who has specific knowledge about tapping in to a JD3203 hydraulics system to add another function like a hydraulic top link...

JD does not have a power beyond kit for this model.

Thanks.

Charlie

Charlie, the 3203 was only out for a short time (2006->2008), and then was replaced quickly for whatever reason-sort of the red headed step child of the 3-series lineup at the time (I hope not to offend any red headed step children on the forum :) so little is available from JD in the way of options for them, and little info in general.

That out of the way...You can replace the oil line #7 in the drawing to feed a new valve, SCV side to the IN port, PB back to the rockshaft, then for the OUT connection you will have to find a port on the tranny case somewhere to place the hose to. It's a custom job, but certainly doable.

Kenny,

As usual great info thanks a ton.

Tapping in to line #7 makes sense. Would you then have to have the new valve be a closed center valve or not. I read that some valves need to be closed (usually adding a plug or some minor mod to make them to be used as a power beyond unit...

I know the 3203 is a no frills model for sure, but knowing it is designed to take a 300 loader means that adding other hydraulics like a top link is very doable, all-be-it, a DIY project. Which is fine with me because that is the kind of guy I am.

I'm doing a ton of reading on power beyond, SCV, electric diverter valves and all, so I don't have to ask questions any more than I have too. But, I suspect there is more than one way to do this and I may have to seek more advise on which my method to use.

Thanks again. I saw one guys post on adding a woods BH to his 3203 but that was in 2011 and he did not go in to details on the power beyond method he used. May be others who read this thread who have added power beyond can join the discusson.

Charlie.

Open center. There is a chance that some 3203 parts would be common with other models.

Open center.

Correct, Open Center with Power Beyond is what you want Charlie.

Brian from FitRite (who posted above) has some great valves and custom Hydraulic Top Links...

I think that PB kit for the backhoe was supplied by Woods at the time, it used the same idea I gave you but did not have the extra port direct back to the the tranny case.

Kenny,

Got it.

Brian, I emailed you directly.

Thanks.

So..one more..Question...

Could the out line of the new valve dump in to the suction line marked as #9 in the drawing?

I would not. Return to tank line is just that, it needs to return to the tank.

Did you get my return e-mail?

Brian,

Got it, makes sense.

Yes, I got the email and will get back with you that way.

Thanks.

Just for those of you who may be new to all of this I found this schematic from Prince Hydraulics that helps me understand what Kenny and Brian are talking about when they describe adding an additional spool/valve in the pressure line upstream from the existing Rock shaft valve body. (Kenny if I said that wrong feel free to correct me)..

Here it is.

I agree...
Somewhere on the tranny is a plug you can use. This is where studying drawing from JDP (JDparts.com) and the machine itself is needed.

Jut wanted to share that I took KennyD suggestion and got very familiar with the JDParts schematics. (thanks Kenny) And....I also decided to post over the JD owning forum asking the guys who own 3320 and 3120 where their oil return lines on their PB goes and low and behold, the oil return on their Transmissions/transaxle housing is right below the transmission filler cap and fortunately, my 3203 has the same plug. So I am good-to-go now.

Ill attach a pic of it just in case someone else may read this to save them some time.

My plan is to get a 2spool prince valve and tap in to the rock shaft pressure line and then of course route the return line to the plug in the pic. I will just put out some QD couplings out back for now and expand it out as needed. Probably a simple hydraulic top link to start.

Thanks everyone.

Charlie.

Charlie, just to be clear - you did NOT mean TEE into the pressure line, right? Because that would give your fluid TWO paths back to tank, and you wouldn't have pressure to EITHER path since one would ALWAYS be open to tank... Steve

(Not tryin' to be a pain, just hoping to KEEP you from one)

Steve,

Yes, but I am not going to tap in to that line after all. I have found a access to plug up on the transmission just below the filler cap that is a much better choice.

On a side note, the function of that line with the in line filter on it is still a bit of a mystery for me as it taps in to what I think it the clutch housing? It comes off of the oil cooler. I suspect it may serve to drain that section of the oil system, but I am not sure.

OK, just so you know you can NOT TEE a PRESSURE line on open center hydraulics, that's why PB valves exist - so if you "tap into" the line going to your rockshaft, the only way it would work is to cut that line, connect the cut end coming FROM the pump into your new PB capable valve - then connect the OTHER half of the cut line to the PB out of your new valve, and wherever you find a Tank return, the Tank port of your NEW valve CAN be tee'd into that.

Another way to put this - pressure lines in SERIES, Tank lines in PARALLEL...

Also be aware that, usually, if you connect as above your 3PH won't work while you're using your new remotes - that's just a momentary thing, meaning you can normally only use ONE function at a time - but as long as you're not moving a remote (new valve) lever away from center, the 3PH will work as it always did.

HTH, if I'm covering things you already know then just don't read this :D

BC,

Yes, that has been my plan on the pressure side all along, thanks to several others who have also helped me understand the importance of pressure lines being in series. Fortunately, this is the easy part of my PB plan, as I can fairly easily divert the pressure line from the pump to the new dual spool valve and connect that PB line over to the loader spool input (where the original pressure line was going) and then connect the drain (tank) line over to the transmission drain port. For the sake of the discussion the line out on the loader spool then connects to the rockshaft valve.

I do appreciate all the help and I think others who are as new to all of this as I am who may read this thread in the future will also benefit.

Even though there is no official PB kit for the 3203, I am benefiting from most of what exists for the kits for the 3120 and the 3320....

from one PacNW person to another...

Thanks.
