Okay, so the engine on my Cub Cadet 1554 seized, and I'm wondering if I can use a horizontal shaft engine powering a pump, with a hydraulic motor powering the rear hydrostatic axle.

It won't have the mowing deck on it. My wife will only be using it with a small garden cart to haul some tools.

Do you already have the pump and motor? What are the details on it as far as engine horsepower, pump and motor displacement?

Anything is possible but it is a complex approach that would likely yield disappointing results. I'd look for a vertical shaft engine off a lawnmower with a dead transmission or see how much work your engine needs to fix.

Really think it would be easier and cheaper to fix the seized engine or get a replacement. A brand new replacement should run about $1700. from Equipatron.com.

Setting up a hydraulic drive system with tank, valve, hoses, oil cooler, pump, pump mounting, hydraulic motor and couplings can get to be expensive. Sorry just not practical in my book.

I'd fix the original engine before installing an intek. Even if it cost the same or a little more.

Sounds like a lot of work for something that won't be worth the sum of parts.

Tyler TX, I'd get on Craigslist and search riding lawn mower, they go cheap without a functional deck.

Here is one 19 miles from you for $300 and it still mows.

You don't need the same or similar engine if all you'll be doing is putting around pulling a cart. All you need to do is drive the rear transaxle. A little 5hp vertical shaft would probably do it. I bought a 6.75 vertical B&S to repower my walk behind trimmer for less than $100 to my door. And it had electric start! You might have to drill a couple of holes for mounting but what's it matter? (Or maybe not--Many verticals have the same foot print.)

I agree but in checking I did not see one with electric start below the $500 dollar level. Where did you find yours?

Thank you for all the replies.
I already have a 13hp horizontal shaft engine with a 14gpm pump. I've never rebuilt a small engine, and am fine keeping it that way.
So, if I can power this thing with a 5.5hp Predator from HF for $99, that's the route I'll go.

IMO 5.5hp would be pretty gutless through a hydro transmission in a tractor that heavy unless your land is completely flat and you plan on towing feathers. Your call though.
