Preferred gas engines for 1 ton pickups

I had a need to check the OM this weekend and found that in my truck, the 8.1/Ally/4.10 was rated 100 lbs more load towing than the same truck with the DM/Ally/3.73. Might explain why some of us don't mind the little extra fuel cost at the pump.:D

Same is true for the Ford V-10 compared to the Diesels. I would still take the diesel any day of the week all things being equal. Yes, the gas engines do have a place but do not hold a candle to the worst diesel engine when it comes to towing.

This comparison shows that the V10, in particular, does pretty well for itself even on a very heavy 15% grade.

I love the 7% grade part and Ford's F-250 6.8 V-10 4.03 axle ratio vs a GMC 2500 with a 6.0 V-8 and 3.73 axle. Why not make it fair and run a 4.10. But even at that the GM was only 1 second slower and gaining in speed. :D Bigger engine, better gearing and still going to lose in a longer run.

I'd try and find a Ford V-10(or if looking older a 460) or the 8.1 chevy(454 if looking older)with a manual trans. I bought a 460(carbed) in '84 that was one of the best towing trucks I have ever owned. The '86 with the 351(fuel injected) I bought as a second truck could not compare with it towing or in fuel mileage either. I'm running an '08 F350 with the V-10 and it does a more than acceptable job towing. It has the Torqueshift auto in it that does a good job while towing, but I would prefer to have a manual tranny any day myself. I bought an auto in this one so my wife would be more comfortable with driving it when the occasion arose. My previous truck was a '97 Dodge with the cummins and the diesel did get a bit better mileage and had more power on the low end, but it was a miserable truck to try and use in the pasture especially since I couldn't seem to keep the 4wd working the last 2 years I had it:mad:. The Dodge body/paint didn't have much going for it either in that age range in my experience.

I also prefer diesel to gas power for any pickup that tows. I am one that runs what many consider to be one of GM's worst diesels and I am quite happy with it. Now its not stock anymore by a long shot. Lots of internal improvements when I put the new engine in the truck. But I can pull hills as good as a gas 350 while getting just over 20mpg with it. If I was towing heavy I would be looking at a 1st gen or early 2nd gen Dodge/Cummins with the 5spd, they can also be upgraded to the 6 speed gear box if you wanted to spend the money, or the 95-98 Ford with the 7.3L PSD.

I am still searching for one of those hard to find '98 PSD's. :p

International did not stop building 7.3 "PSD"s in 98, they made plenty of them. It was Ford who was disingenous and decided to stuff them into trucks badged as early 99s. LOL:p
