the larger backhoes are like that yes, the ligher are not. If I see one around our lot I will shoot some pictures of it then. Its most often used on the B-Series because their method of doing preserves the ground clearance.

RayH,

Yes there are two pins. However only one of them actually keeps the backhoe frame from from moving upwards [along with the safety bar that goes under the 3PH arms, if that pin should fail].

Special hardened pins are supplied with the backhoe. CTyler's point was that if the wrong pin is used, which is possible because they are a standard diameter, it could fail and put the operator in danger. It is a very valid consideration. People have lost thier lives being crushed between 3PH backhoe frame/seats and the ROPS.

For this reason the backhoe should have those pins attached to it with chains. Those chains can be a pain because they can get stuck between the housing and the PTO shield. I would rather the chains were not there, but will not remove them because it would be too easy to make a mistake and put the wrong pins in place, like CTyler said.

As small, but important, thing to keep in mind...

Thats a good point. I think the limiter bar is actually the safe guard if you were to have some sort of upper link malfunction. The reason for the two pins and the huge upper arm is to take up some of the stress that the BH puts on the lower links and arms and stabilize the hoe. The 4690 I saw mounted on a 2910 was very solid but I didnt get a chance to attach/detach it. It will be interesting to see how this thing actually locks into place.
If you actually look at how the limiter bar works, it changes the stresses that are normally associated with 3PH BHs. It still compresses the top link but now the limiter bar is the pivot point at the bottom, not the rear axle. This gives the hoe less leverage to pull the tractor apart at the bottom seem but puts more stress on the lower arm attachments, which is what I believe is the weak link in this setup.

RayH,

I think the limiter bar is actually the safe guard if you were to have some sort of upper link malfunction.

On my BL4690A that is the only function I can see it performing. It could be left off and the hoe would perform the same, but an important safety feature would be missing. No one with any common sense would ever knowingly operate their hoe with the limiter missing, hopefully.

The top arm of the backhoe that attaches to the HD top link on my B2910 has a notch in it, that slips over the bottom pin, and a hole above that notch that the top pin slides through. When putting the backhoe on you drop the top "arm" (called a Mast Ear in the parts list) like a hook over the bottom pin, and then you slide the top pin in place.

It still compresses the top link but now the limiter bar is the pivot point at the bottom, not the rear axle.

I don't think it works like this on my b2910. The limiter bar does nothing and the connection to the tractor is the HD top link point on the top, and the two lower 3PH arms on the bottom.

I am just trying to convey some information here and hope I don't sound like I am trying to debate anything, which I am not.

Hope you find these comments of some interest. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
