Here in upstate New York, just over the Vermont border, I'm paying $4/bale for alfalfa/timothy/clover mix (second cutting) and $3.50/bale for mixed grass (second cutting), both types for my dairy goats. I give my horses and sheep first cutting mixed grass for $3/bale.

Hey Scotty, please tell me where you've seen hay for $2/bale in our area!!! I'll fill my lofts with it, if it's good quality!!!!

Mornin Rich,
OK I talked to Neil and he is getting $8 for 400 lb rounds. I guess that figures out to about $1 per bale for the square !!! He has sold all the hay he brought in this year, about 75 acres total, to locals that saw his ad in Ag- Review a local paper ! You might find a copy of that and check prices. I have one more neighbor that I can check with and he still bales small squares, he lives just below me. Pm me if you want and I can give you more info !

Georgia Boy,
Just outside of Clyattville, probably 90 miles from you.

Square bales are going for about $6 a bale around here, if you just call one of the feed suppliers. Might get a better price if you found the source and cut out the middle guy, but that is what they get.

They're just regular old squares. Not metric  . They do bale some nice hay up there though.

I was just kidding with you, I am sure you do have some nice hay up there.

OUCH!! What are cattle farmers doing for feed then, are they range fed?

ETA LOL...the cattle not the farmers :D

Yeah we don't feed hay to cattle if we can help it. What does get fed depends on the area, and what local conditions are like.

In some places there is no grass, so mulga (a type of tree) is pushed so the animals can reach the leaves (usually by dozer, although sometimes its cut also).

Other places have plenty of grass, which in dry times is supplemented with urea mollasses mixes.

I read in the paper about a company that transports food manufacturing waste to feedlots for cattle. One example was potato chips that are spilled or otherwise wasted in manufacture are fed to the cattle. I think those cattle will be wanting beer and TV too :)

Just finished planting 1/2 acre of grass and needed 50 bales of hay. Paid 1.50 per bale, I thought it was a good price, but now after reading these posts I know it was a great price.

Hay? Or did you buy straw? Big difference, especially in price.

Ditto.. we always used straw when we seed an mulch and roll in.

Just bought 2 ton @ $100 a ton. Not a great price, but way better'n what they were trying to milk us for last year. Last year we had hay shortages, this year it was a booming year but I think the farmers are trying to keep the prices from sliding back.

I know a lot of people with more animals on less land than we have and I just don't know how they do it.

We're getting $50 for pure alfalfa (1600lbs) rounds and straw really has no value ,Most people just come bale it and take it away ,If i sell it it bareley covers baling and fuel?
