Pricing a PTO Tiller for Sale

I prefer buying something in it's original paint. Even if faded and scratched. I see new paint as an attempt to hide something.

I agree. Unless it's a careful restoration paint is often used to hide problems.

A lot of TBN'ers don't read all the forums. Tillers are heavy. When I was looking for one I added $1/mile for ever mile I would have to drive out of my way to get it. Thus it would cost me about $80 to get off I81 at Kingsport to pick it up. For Jstpssng it would be about $900 from Maine, for BigBlue $1000 from Winsted, MN.

So I suggest the OP immediately puts an ad in the TBN classified section and mention it in the regional forum and the gardening forum.

Thanks again everyone for the thoughts, and especially to sixdogs for writing my ad. Looks like tomorrow will be a nice enough day to get out and clean it up.

Good points about getting it on the market in the soon. I've been thinking that spring was some time off since we can't put anything in the ground until May up here in the mountains. But I'd guess much of my potential market is "off the mountain" and they get spring much earlier than we do.

You also have to remember that no one pays retail prices. I haven't bought a new tiller in a few years but I would guess to 20% to 30% off on a high end tiller is in the ballpark for a clean sale to a savvy buyer so take that number as the starting point for the calculations. A sale on Craigslist is a clean sale for cash and is the same as cash at a dealer.

How hard would it be to sell a new tractor at a retail price when it was bought for the 10%--12% or more % off that we all know we can get?

Now, seasonal variation really affects pricing. Tillers sell great in the late winter, early spring and maybe summer. It's a hard sell in fall and early winter unless cheap. Try to sell a snowblower for a premium price right now and it won't happen.

Agreed!
You and I think alike!
But .... WE are not prospective buyers.
Paint is cheap, and the new look will attract many people.

Yes, but I wouldn't be going down to buy a tiller. I would be going to find some sunshine, with the tiller as an excuse.

It's a nice day today, so I dug it out of the shed, washed it and took photos. I posted it in the classified here. Not yet on CL.

What bugs me is all the implements for sale on CL that are half hidden in the weeds. If "it" works so good use it and clean up the mess around it.

Terry, very nice ad, nice job of displaying the tiller. Don't depreciate the value by spraying paint on it. This is a great starting place. I'd go for CL with the same ad/price. Keep us posted on your progress!!!!

And an aside about paint. I peruse CL several times daily, both in Northern Virginia and Northeast Mississippi. I'm amazed by the number of implements I see spray painted in Mississippi ON A PALLET showing the paint pattern. It seems in Northern Virginia they at least move the pallet.
