Problem starting 5045d John Deere tractor

I'm trying to find the model number I wrote it down but can't find it . Maybe y'all can tell the yr model.

Tratordata shows 5045D built from 2008-2014 but has no serial numbers listed.

I have very limited knowledge on diesel engines except rule #1 . Keep the fuel tanks full & use additives in the winter months........... period.

b&d you're correct on the hot air as I see flies still alive here. It hasn't been below freezing so far this Winter but very few times. I think it's called "Global change" Have you recieved much snow?

After an extended mild spell which occurred immediately after I bought a new snowmobile and hauled the snowblower out of storage .winter has returned . The weather has been daytime around zero and -15F last night and tonight . Highway 9 and 21 were closed again last night . Probably now too. At the moment we are on the way back from driver training for the youngest . Traveling on county roads and cow paths.
6-8" of light powder snow that whips up into zero visabilify and snow drifts.
Supposed to be 20F tomorrow and about 30F Monday . It gets cold on a sled at 0F with the wind chill of 40mph. Being lake view from Lake Huron and open water will change the weather in minutes with a direction shift.
Today, tomorrow and Monday is free riding on the trails without having to purchase a trail pass .
I won't purchase a full priced frail pass 3/4 of the way through the season on four sleds. although two sleds are older than the kids and are discounted as vintage.

If this were my tractor I would have the intake preheat , coolant heater and block heater. Why not you only live once. None of them are that expensive I don't know why they are a option.
I ask in a earlier post how the coolant heater works but didn't see the answer .

coolant heater can be a block heater, tank heater or a rad hose heater. rad hose heater can tend to heat the radiator more than the engine unless the installation is well planned.

Looks like your friend bought her tractor new in April 2010 according to the serial number you provided. So I would say the filter is overdue to be changed. Has the oil and filter been changed? Is the oil filter green as well?

On you coolant heater question, the heater is nothing more than a heating element similar to what is used in a home hot water heater. It has a built in thermostat to keep from overheating, but there is no pump to circulate coolant. It relies on the coolant transferring heat and gradually heating entire engine. If an external tank heater is used, the coolant is transferred from the tank heater to the engine block by natural thermo-siphon action. The hot coolant rises and flows into the upper connection to the engine and that draws cooler coolant from the lower connection into the tank heater.

Thanks for the coolant explaination . Yes she needs a oil change and fuel filter change.
The lady rides cutting horses and doesn't pay attention to her tractors maintenance .
Thanks for reading the yr model and to all the others who have helped. Hope I can help out in the future. Right now I'm just dreaming of of owning a green tractor. We do have a new 2025r jd at work about 2 yrs old with a backhoe attachment and front end bucket. . It's for small jobs to get into tight spots.

I got the oil , oil filter and fuel filter for the tractor but have not changed it yet. I got 15w -40
Plus50 -11 from jd. I'll change everything for her soon.
