Problem with curl cylinder?

/ Problem with curl cylinder? #41
The service manager checked the curl cylinder in place before they decided to haul off my machine and replace the curl valve. He disconnected one line on the top of the curl cylinder and capped it and held the controls at full out and full in for several minutes at a time. He said if there was a leak it would have shown by then. His diagnosis is that the cylinder is fine and the problem was somewhere else.

His test indicated it drooped 1.5" in 10 minutes at the cylinder rod.

I did have a leak somewhere (I noticed when they were hauling it away it had a small puddle of hydro fluid under it after sitting overnight). I asked them to check for that leak but don't have any confidence that they did. I'll keep a eye on it and check myself.

Thanks for all the comments.

I have posted this before, but will post it again. Put some florescent dye in the hydraulic system, You can find it at NAPA, or other places. Cost , maybe $4.00. Follow the directions on bottle.

After the dye has been in the system and circulated good, run the machine, and exercising all the controls. To check for leaks, you shine a black light on the machine, and move the light all around, if you have any leaks, they will fluoresce and glow a greenish /yellow. Once you find the leak, and fix it, clean all the dye and oil off the machine parts, so you will not be looking at an old leak.

If you work, and park in the dirt, you may not notice a leak for a good while, maybe when you are checking fluid. If parking on cement floor, it will be obvious.

When checking for leaks, it should be dark, like in a closed garage, or night time.
Anybody can use this dye, in autos, tractors, anything with oil , motor oil, hydraulic fluid, etc. They use something similar for A/C systems.

You can do this leak check, daily , weekly, or whenever . I think you will be impressed with the results.

That would be a lot of oil on the ground if its an external leak. You couldnt miss it if you looked.... And yould be needing to add oil fairly frequently.

Good point Larry, I checked the fluid level when I got it back and it was at the top of the sight glass but I don't know if they added any fluid, the person who delivered it didn't know anything and there was no paperwork.
