Boy times sure do change. My daughters prom is coming up. She will be taking a young man from different school than the one she attends. Before she is allowed to purchase tickets she must have her date fill out a form
It is part emergency info and part affadavit. Need his name age and school he attends. Then needs his parents name and emergency contact info plus their signature. Lastly he needs his school guidance counseler and principal to sign it.
Wow!! I guess in light of Columbine and the reservation school shootings you can not be to safe. But we sure are taking away "the innocence of youth"

So fill out the for with bogus data. See if it goes through. I am betting it will. The schools dont care about the kids, they care about the paper work. The process the lawyers say they have to do.

Perhaps it is not associated with shootings at all. Maybe they had trouble/disruptions at last year's prom by kids that did not attend that school -- just a thought.

I bet the incorrect information would not get through since the parents have to sign as well as the guideance counselor and the principal. When they sign that form they are stating the info is correct and could be held liable.

I imagine the school just wants to insure that the boy is not a trouble maker and his parents are aware he is going. Never can be too careful in these days. Times are a changing and not necessarily for the good always.

Does this application only apply to students from other schools?
Ahhh, what happens if the date isn't in school (e.g. graduated the previous year)?

The content doesn't seem bad. My daughter isn't old enough for a prom but I've already started compiling the questions and statements I plan on giving any of my daughters dates. Of course this application process will occur while sitting on a rocking chair in front of the house with a shotgun across my lap.

Yes it is only for students from other schools as they would already have info on their own students. When you purchase tickets you must give them the names of both parties.
The form states that the person must have graduated within the last three years. Then the home school signatures are waived. I guess if you got out 4 years ago you can not attend.

My daughters date had no problem getting signatures so maybe this is something all the schools do.

Who's going to check to see if it is authentic? John Hancock.

Sounds pretty corny to me too, but that falls right in line with all the other CYA measures schools are taking. As I think someone else said, it doesn't really prevent anything (spiked punch, fist fights, date rate, or mass murder), but it's more meant in case anything does happen; then the school can give everybody a warm-fuzzy "we did everything we could" and maybe keep the lawyers from swarming.

While I'm convinced of the above explaination for 95% of their reason, it also strikes me as further proof that many parents want the schools be responible for the less pleasant parenting duties. As Bczoom said he still plans; it used to be the parents' responsibility to do the interview and/or "background check", then introduce themselves and their vicious dog or favorite shooting iron or a picture of Medusa titled Grandma. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

I married a teacher and may be biased, but by the time you get through ethics, manners, sex-ed, personal finances, basic hygene, and the paperwork to prove all of the above are being rationed fairly....when do you do math, science, or reading?

O'boy, did I get off track....but the facts still apply. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Sounds really overzealous. I have ran into similar things getting my 5 year old signed up to start school next year.

They have actually gone as far as to say that parents can't go on field trips, can't send party invitations to school with the kids and lots of other stuff. Parent interaction at school functions is a HUGE part of the parenting process. I don't want my kid being (good) friends with a kid that I or my wife havn't met his parents. Without meeting the parents you seldom know what kind of environment the child is raised in or the beliefs that that child is taught that might be vocalized to my child. Even seeing the 2 children playing together, you can get an idea of how the child is raised.

You get some people saying that they think people are pushing off the more "unpleasant" points of parenting on the schools. I think schools are trying to isolate parents from too much of the teaching process.

I will be monitoring the school quite heavily because I will NOT allow the schools to override morals even if it is their politically correct way to handle something. I guess I'll be keeping my kids home regularly.
