Robert, the problem I have, now that my wife is a high school teacher (she gave up a big money private banking job 3 years ago to give something back to the world as a teacher) is that while you and I might care about out kids, and while you and I might take the time to know the parents of our children's friends, there are plenty of people out there who don't do those things . . . one of their spawn will likely bring some ne'redo'ell to the prom one year and a problem will ensue . . . and that is when the school will clamp down and place draconian measures on the students. Worst thing is that the idiot parents who don't care seem to be the ones who scream the loudest about their little pride and joy needing to be safe. The reality is that birth control 17 years earlier should have been used by those parents because the biggest long term threat to their kids is those parents.

Until my wife became a teacher I would have gladly blamed the schools for a lot. I guess I see a different side of things now.

Wow.. that is a WHOLE different can of worms to open (I apologize... you just brushed it, I am the one opening it) but I find quite a bit of todays measures at the least offensive and at most downright illegal.

Because of the terrorist threat and fear in todays society people are willing to give up constitutional rights FAR too easily. Two different times in my life, at two different stores (Walmart and Target), I have been leaving an they have asked to search my bag and my receipt. Simple request????? &%$# NO. People give up that right day in and day out. My response is usually something like "I am very sorry Miss, but if you think I have done something wrong, then get a policeman and arrest me. Otherwise I will not submit to being searched." Then I keep right on walking. I am polite and try not to make a stink out of it, but its really very simple and people give up their rights too easily in the name of safety.

Searches to enter a place are a different story. They have every right to make you submit to a search to let you gain access. But because you have every right to not get searched (and not gain entry) then it is not illegal nor is it a loss of rights.

We've heard from all the "girls' Daddys", but this could be even more fun as a two way street.

One of my college friends used to rattle off some pretty good advice his father gave him; to even the balance just a bit thought I'd pass on his dating quotes [I did clean the verbage just a bit for purposes here /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif]:

"When on a date: keep the car between the ditches and the 'tool' in the britches"

"Before you crawl in the back-seat with a girl, look at her real hard and imagine waking up with her...you may have to, for the rest of your life!"

"If you get a girl 'in a family way' you're going to need to find a house: if you marry her, you'll need a place for your family; if you don't marry her, you aint my son and aint living under this roof."

Too true that the biggest "problem parents" are ussually the ones screaming the loudest; especially when there's no way "little Jonny" could possibly ever do anything wrong. The scariest part is that it is a vicious circle:
Not only do the children of the parents often pass on bad parenting skills, but they also seem to reproduce at twice the rate and half the age as more well mannered people.

I remember my parents saying that if a teacher ever had to disipline me, I'd think it was mild compared to what would happen at home; now I think you can sue both your teachers and your parents for malpractice! Actually, I would say there are too many parents who are guilty of malpractice [yes, a few bad teachers too].

Ditto on both counts there too.

Don't think so, but you never know!
Perhaps there was this universal "unwritten child rearing manual" that somehow disappeared alltoghether sometime in the 80's. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Oh man, what a riot. It is sad in this day and age that this manner of 'protection or prevention" is needed. Even back in the "old days" 1975/76 we had to have permission to bring a person outside the school into a prom etc. Granted not like today, mostly the conselor would call the other school and check the kid out We did not have apps. Good thing too, if I had to fill one out, I would not have been approved.......at my own school

I think most of us older folks grew up under that threat, and in my case, at least, I knew it was not an idle threat, either. And when I was a kid in small towns, I was never afraid of the police either. I knew all of them, but I was sure afraid of what would happen if they caught me wrong and told my Dad.

I feel the same way and do sorta the same thing! I can't stand it when that happens. I'll say,"Sorry, but you've got video rolling. So if you think I did something wrong, then review the tape or call the cops. Thank you".
Another thing is when you go in the store to return something and they want to see the receipt and item to "tag it" before you can walk the 10 or 20 feet to customer service. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif
