Propane Cost???

It's a lot more complicated than you would imagine. My father in law owned a farm/home fuel distributorship for over forty years and watched most of his competition go out of business due to depending on suppliers, allotments and so on. In the 70's he bought his own transports and hired drivers in addition to driving one himself all over the country to keep his customers in fuel. It cost him a boatload of money and an audit resulted in fines as in some cases he lost money.

He retired quite a few years ago and regulations are lots worse than ever, no one can put in the hours he and his drivers did without problems from DOT, rigs are outrageous and some of the large distribution points have closed. Two river terminals closed with only one locally and the next 125 miles away.

I'm not saying someone isn't making some money, but it's probably not your local supplier.

I totally agree. I should be more clear. I buy from MFA. It's not them ripping us off. It's at levels above them. I'd hate to be the local trucker driver/delivery guy. I'm guessing he gets chewed on many times a day.....

My father in law sure caught a lot of flack and didn't bother to tell them he was losing money. He died in 1999, so he isn't seeing this; he use to get mad enough to spit nails. I remember him being told no fuel was available in our area, but when we went up to the Mississippi River, we could see fuel barges riding low in the water. He was once told he could have a barge load of fuel if he could store it.

Its high around here also. We had our tank filled Christmas Eve. Something like $2.20 a gallon. My wife works with someone that paid around $4.80 last week. We don't have a big tank and have a high efficiency furnace so I will probably get through the winter before I need another fill. Its crazy, but that price difference with how much we buy, usually around 250 to 300 gallons amounts to almost $600 extra.

Has anybody here figured their cost of electricity per Kw , then calculated the break even point for LP prices ? Paying $4.00-$5.00+ for LP isn't making sense.

My house is all Electric. Baseboard heat. Last month our electric bill was $281. My Mom will spend $1000 this month just to heat her house with Propane.

here we are ~ $.11/kwh (electricity = 3412 Btu/kwh; propane = 92,500 Btu/gal)
at this rate our cross over for heat pump use is ~ $.93/gal assuming heatpump cop of a little over 3.
Once we use 1200kwh our electricity cost is $.077 so crossover is ~ $.65/gal

I am quite happy that I chose total electric - neighbors are all getting limited to 100gal tank fills since last week.
