I'm interested in summer fill propane prices. They vary so much from place to place. We're in central Illinois.

An hour north of me there are two places selling propane for under $1 per gallon.

I had to pay $1.70 per gallon. I know other suppliers near me are charging $1.60 and $1.50.

Can someone enlighten me as to why the price is so much different 60 miles apart?

What is the price in your area?

Thanks,

Kevin

My local supplier seems to think they are not part of the national market- they try to screw all their customers all the time: $4.50/gal in winter, maybe as low as $3.25 other times. Of course, this is California!

here in our part of Canada, residential propane is now at 45 cents per liter delivered. (3.785 liters per US gallon)
in the middle of winter, the price is usually in the low 60 cents.

Just got mine topped off at $2.53 a gallon the dealer called me and said they had a sale???? Still a good price for this area of Arizona.

A lot of propane suppliers have captive customers (rented tanks) who can't change suppliers. I guess the also figure the non captives don't shop around too much.

DANG!!! talk about wide price margins depending on where a person lives. We live in the North Eastern part of AZ and always get ours filled just before winter hits, the average price for the past 3yrs has been around $2.5gal. but we can use another supplier if we wanted to but they seems to be almost all the same when we check the current prices.

We filled up in late April and I think were quoted $2.19 a gallon. At that time spot prices were around $1.15/gal Mont Belvieu, TX Propane Spot Price FOB (Dollars per Gallon) . I called last week and was quoted the same $2.19, spot prices have dropped to $0.80, so a difference of $0.35 to the wholesaler translates into $0.00 to the buyer. I'm pretty sure when the prices go up they track more closely.

Holy crap! I'm moving to central WI. Of course, I'd need more propane if I did ;)

I got a call of a 'sale' for $1.99 which I thought was a decent price until this thread opened up. The problem I have with shopping around is every dealer around here forces a pressure test on you for the first delivery from them, which costs $50, and the price difference is never enough to make up for that fee. The local UPG is normally the cheapest per gallon price around here, but that's because they make up for the losses by ripping people off (last winter I was screwed out of 135gal of propane, saving a dime a gallon isn't worth losing 135gallons ).

We're a spread out market, so we get held hostage by the only three places around.

Is there normally a lowest time to buy? Is July it?

How are people figuring out what they are paying wholesale?

I live in Skagway Alaska and pay $1.00 per pound. That works out to be $4.20 per gallon. I would love something cheaper, but the view is nice.

$1.32 delivered a gal here now was $1.35 last week sure beats the $2.09 I paid all last winter, its about time to fill looks like. Oh and I am not signing a fixed price contract again I got hosed last year wont be doing that again...

Summer fill (June) was $1.30/gal. Prepay for the rest of the season, $1.45. I'll take it.

some places are right on or near a major gas line. that they can tie right into, to fill there local supply trucks. other companys may need to travel to another city or some place to fill up there local supply trucks.

out of the 2 to 3 places that would deliver to me, central butane, over in norris, IL. gave me a descent deal with putting in gas line from house to new tank location, and from new tank location to shed. plus less hassle to deal with than couple other companies.

as long as i call and give a couple weeks notice, they are hear next day, quiet as could be, and gone before i dogs or i could notice. i tell them when ever they are out and about this way and summer fill. and give some discounts. so far in last couple years, it maybe a week or so before or a couple weeks after summer fill, but will give discount as well.

the other couple places, took a couple weeks before they made it out, always seemed higher in price. ya now that i said above i am going to be in trouble. *ughs* but it is just like gas for vehickle prices. there some small size towns that seem to be always lower, while once you get in the main bigger cities prices are higher.

We had a gas company that charges what they could get away with. Usually 1.5$ more and our neighbor was different than us got rid of them and went wih a local company much cheaper. Only run a tankless system on propane now but thinking of hooking smoker up to the main line
