PT-422 Fan Temperature Switch

You are correct that the thermostat switch is not used much. Once it comes on, it stays on until I am done working. I have never ever witnessed it cycle off once it comes on. I put a little piece of orange safety tape on my fan shroud so I could tell when it came on. The little tape flaps around and I don't have to reach around to feel the air flow.

I talked to the manufacturer of the switch today. The switch being used is not rated for DC. They do have a switch rated for DC, but only one amp. The fan pulls about 5 amps. I would recommend that if you care, put in a relay that is driven by the switch. The relay then controls the fan. I am at 850 hours and have replaced the switch once. I would say that's not too bad. I will continue to replace it. It does not cycle much so it does not wear out too quickly.

I think it is probably not good to cool the system in cold weather. It would increase the warm up time. With a switch, I guarantee that I will forget to turn it on during at least one hot day, and probably many. I don't see how this increases the PT life. As such, I will keep replacing the switch. I guess I am due.

I have the same switch on my 1460, and I just ran a current clamp on it, and it pulls 7.4 amps DC. I guess I should look at a new solution, or expect to be switching this thing out a lot. I will give Terry a call and see what he thinks.

That temp sensor, is nothing more than a make or break function. The fan is what is drawing the current. I doubt if those temp sensors fail that often. Once the fan comes on, it will probably stay on.

It still last longer than a spark plug. Just keep a spare and replace as needed. Not a perfect solution, but not a crisis either. I have never seen one cut off once it cut on.

I know that, I was just stating the amps of the fan on the 1460, that's all. The higher the fan current, the more trouble the temp sensor will be. If people are having trouble with the 5 amp fan on the 422, I am probably going to have trouble even sooner. It is a very easy fix with a relay, so I think I will go ahead and get one.
