heres the start to my latest project, i got this for free its a 15 hp compressor im gona mount it on a trailer and convert it to run off my tractor pto with a jackshaft and large pulley to gear it up from the 540

markct thats going to be one sure fire way to keep your tractor tires aired up wherever you go. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

yea im sure it would fill a tire fast! i am setting it up to use for stuff like sandblasting or running a small jackhammer maybe, we still have a small compressor in the shop for air tools and filling tires i just wanted something for the times you need alot of air.

good home-built.

Is that "blue" component an air cleaner? A friend here made a similar compressor to yours and he added a Ford3000 tractor air cleaner. Working well.

well nomad the entire compressor is painted blue, but i think you mean the round part sticking up that is the air intake, the way you see the compressor now is just how it came outa the plant it was used in, i am going to just use the compressor head, not the electric motor of course, i have to build a trailer and mount the jackshaft on it to drive it and all still.

Yes, you may have to add a really big pulley.
Whats RPM value of original electric motor on it?

yup, i got a 24 inch pulley, you can see the edge of it in the bottom of the pic actualy, it will run to the 16 inch pulley giving me about a 1.5 step up, the compressor says max speed 1100 rpm so i figure it will run about 8 or 900 this way i think

24" pulley will give enough speed (540x1.5 = 810 RPM) to compressor and will do the work. But its size, hence, weight of that pulley will be big. Centrifugal forces will be big on such a large pulley - so, a better balance is needed. You really need an air cleaner at air intake of that compressor because it will operate in a dusty environment. Good luck and take it easy.

I have a 2-cylinder compressor left over from my old unit; the tank rotted out so I pulled it apart and used the motor for a bench mounted polishing wheel.

So, I though of doing as you mention, and maybe have a 20gal tank. But, I did not figure how to maintain pressure, since it would be hard to raise/lower pto speed when max pressure was reached. I know gas powered compressors idle down when a pressure point is met, but do not know how to cross that over to this hybrid...

The gas powered jobs are using a pressure activated cutout switch. You hear the engine idle down, as it isn't under load once the tank/compressor kicks out.

When pressure drops.. the switch kicks over, and pressure begins to rise again.

Think of it like the pressure switch on your well ( if you have one ).. kicks out at x .. kicks in at x )
