PTO alignment trouble

I am having a bear of a time aligning the PTO shaft of my Bearcat chipper to my Kubota PTO. The flywheel of the chipper is too heavy to allow me to easily twist the PTO shaft. After 1 hour I was still unable to successfully align it by turning the tractor end 1/16 turn at a time. Any suggestions? /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

Can you turn the flywheel itself by hand?

Also, I have put a screwdriver in the u-joint to gain some leverage and turn the shaft.

Sometimes, I disconnect the shaft from the implement and hook it to the tractor first. Then I can move the implement and line it up from that end. Just some ideas.

unless I am not reading this right, why not just put the lever for the PTO in Mid and then you can turn the spindle on the tractor to where you need it.

I can turn the pto on the tractor about 3/4 of a full turn. But it's like working blind - not knowing where to stop. The collar on the pto shaft conceals the grooves. Is anybody using any type of index marking?

I was always able to just push the PTO driveshaft coupler against the PTO output shaft of the tractor, then turn the tractor PTO by hand until the shaft coupler slipped on just a fraction of an inch, telling me it was lined up. Then I pushed the pin or pulled the collar back while pushing it the rest of the way on.

Is it possible that the flywheel on the chipper is jammed with a piece of debris? An unchipped chunk of wood from your last usage could still be in there. You may have to open the flywheel cover to fully check and remove the offending piece.

You should be able to rotate the PTO shaft by hand with only moderate effort otherwise.
