Seems I read a while back of a gizmo that's pto driven like a giant weedeater for cleaning up around the perimeter of the property. What would you call this thing and does anyone use one? It would be nice for buzzing along the edge of the woods and along the fence lines. Anything to keep me out of the poison ivy that tends to move in those places.

I found this via Google search: Weed Chopper

Is this what you had in mind?

Yes, that's exacly what I had in mind. A "weed chopper" looks like it would be a pretty handy gadget to have around. Any members have any experience with this or any similar unit?
kf4, thanks for the info. That "Google" is the cats pajamas.

That's a pretty cool gizmo for someone needing to mow around lots of fencing.:D

It seems to me that it might be a bit more handy with a hydraulic arm to change the angle of the arm from the seat so you could get further under fences while avoiding the posts.

I recall one that pivoted when it hit something solid. That made it perfect for trimming a fence line.

Some years ago I made one out of a 36" mower deck. Put bush hog typle blades on it so it cuts 48" swath. Great for berrycanes, small saplings etc but I don't use it when anyone else is in the vicinity due to the exposed blade tips.( Safety police would lock me up)
The string trimmer looks great for grass, weeds etc but I would worry about the juice from poison ivy getting sprayed onto surfaces that you might then touch....

I too recall the one that swung back when it got to a fence post. Looked pretty handy. Too many projects.....

Both links I posted show mowers that roll around fence posts.

I don't have a PTO model but I do have a push behind with a 6.5 h.p. Briggs. It uses the same line size .155 for cutting. It will definitely do a job on tall weeds and grass. However, any solid objects hidden in the grass (piece of wood, old metal fence post etc. will tear the line pretty quickly. Have plently of replacement line on had. I buy mine in 50' rolls at Menard's. I use the Gator Brand. I have some places on my property that need to be cut that are to close to a drop off which gives me the pucker factor. Use the high wheeled string trimmer for those areas. DR Power Equpment offers several models including one that is self-propelled and I believe uses a.177 size line for cutting.

But you still can't mow out over ditches and banks with it can you.?

I'm working on putting together some ideas I have using the concept of a hydraulically powered weed wacker type of set up, only it will be on the end of a rather long boom that is operated from the operators seat. I have a ditch running parallel with the road that is 5 feet deep. My sickle bar mower is not long enough to reach completely across it. It leaves an unsightly unmowed strip that looks like he!!. Using the weed wacker concept, I can get deep into the ditch and keep it looking clean. If I can make it operate with the same concept of a back hoe, I believe it can achieve what I'm looking for. Perhaps there is something out there that I am unaware. Thanks, Roger
