PTO drivetrain to 3/4" round shaft with 3/16" keyway - questions

I designed a system like this but never finished building it.
Mine was to power a water pump.
I took the PTO drive shaft on my brush hog since it had a round shaft.
Then I bought a piece of DOM tube with a 3/4 inch hole in the center
and with an outside diameter to fit in the PTO drive shaft.
I planned to weld the DOM tube to the 3/4 shaft and drill a hole
thru both of them to accept the shear bolt for the brush hog.

Maybe this will give you an idea.
Get a piece of DOM tube to fit a PTO drive shaft you have,
then drill and tap a hole all the way thru it to accept a short bolt
from both sides. You could get a keyway cut into your "bushing"
and let one of the bolts hold the key in place. Works in theory anyway.

Hub City doest seem to list a spline to round bore bushing like Todd described. That would seem an ideal solution.

Sure they do- part number 0332-00408 then you use part number 0332-00394 a double male 1 3/8 spline or 0332-00356 if you want the grooves for the quick pin, to plug into the PTO coupling......

In effect one has created option 2 of denisd's post....
Or he could use the adapter from option 1 with a double male spline.....

Besides the one at Hub City, Surplus Center offers this one- Surplus Center Item Detail although it might be a little long depending on how much room he has. The Hub City one is 3" shorter....and if one wanted he could cut the Hub City full spline one (0332-00394) to the shortest length possible if a means to secure it can be used.

This puts an extended assembly on his winch shaft and bearing. Not like a bushing which could be made to add no length. Pooh Bear almost made one - Todd bought one at NAPA. That would be my 1st stop.

I need to go into the NAPA store and see if they have PTO adapters. I hesitate to special order there. Most people I talk to don't grasp this application as well as you guys have.

I see the 10" splined shaft now, thanks. I could cut it down to where the parts butt.

It still does start getting tight in the 24" space I have between tractor and winch. Driveline assembly + 10" splined shaft + snap hitch adapter. But that's an option (1).

Pooh Bear's very clever tubing idea (custom, like option 2) eliminates the adapters. The interior keyway cutting would incur a machine shop minimum charge, which still might be less than the two adapters. But I still need a U-joint at the winch end.

A machine shop could make the adapter (option 2) by taking that 10" splined shaft, bore it 3/4" and cut a 3/16" keyway, probably at the same charge.

For replacing a yoke (option 3), I see what you mean about matching a yoke to a driveline. They're all different sizes of ear width and ear hole ID. The yoke at Partsco gives only the ear outside width.

One supplier, Advanced Drivelines, quoted $190 plus freight for a complete driveline including the 3/4" round keyed bore at the implement end. That's starting to sound pretty good...

However you end up, if there is no other overload protection in the driveline, consider using a brass key rather that a steel one on the 3/4" winch input shaft. I suspect that your tractor pto, even at idle, produces enough torque to damage the winch if you tie into a large load. If a brass key shears and the winch is not damaged, then perhaps a steel key of 1/2 the coupling length could be tried, etc. Brass keys are available from most marine supply houses, and you can probably find one online.
