Hello ALL,
I have a rookie question. I have a Prince PTO mounted hydraulic pump for a 3pt backhoe and was wondering if this needs to be positioned upright while on the PTO shaft?
I am trying to make a torque arm setup because it didn't come with one. There was no paper work or information on the backhoe when I acquired it earlier this summer. Seems to me it wouldn't make a difference but wanted to check with some experts.
Thanks.

It does not have to be absolutely upright. If it has a vent on top, you can let it angle 10-20 deg of center.

Never seen a pto pump with a vent but anything is possible. The important part is the torque arm or chain as the case may be.

No vent on this one either but It did swing around and was upside down on the pto shaft while I was fitting a piece of angle iron for the torque arm. That's when my question came up.
All set though I have it upright and the torque arm is right down on the tractor hitch frame.
Thanks guys.

It's just a gear pump. There are no vents on pumps. As long as it's spinning the right way, it won't care if it's up or down.

Now if it was a setup like on the picture below, that would matter but you could also change the vent on the speed increaser as needed.

On the gearbox, not the pump. That is a vent on top of the gearbox and that is what needs to be at the top. Thanks for illustrating my point! That was the general question of mounting it as the pump is integral with the gearbox.
The site glass and/or plug on the side of the gearbox can be traded for the vent as well. Sorry that I was generalizing "PTO pump vent"

I believe and accordingly to the picture on the first post, the OP is using this style of PTO pump (image below) without the gearbox. The entire thing is the pump itself.

Not your question but be sure you have a good heavy arm to hold the pump from turning. Much more torque on it than a sprayer pump. No comparison on the pressure between the two.

Indeed, I believe you are right. Hard to tell from picture, but he did say it was a Prince. Your picture though does have the vent. Anyway, this pump can be mounted any position.

I had some bracketry made for mine. It has available, a plate that interfaces between the increaser and the tractor. I had a local friend fabricate it. 'my' increaser has a vent but, the vent as has been said, can be moved to the side by swapping the vent/plug.

Does your setup (tractor) have two PTO output shafts?

You are mounting a pto pump for hydraulic pressure use. No idea what kind of pressure you need but give careful thought to it. I have one for a boom mower and that pump is somewhere about 3500 psi I think is correct, could be 4,000 psi. That is right high tourgue to be held in place. I failed to have mine locked in place one, nothing serious done, well if you don't mine the cost of about $400 for two twisted hyd hoses... Was not an issue until the mower was engaged. Very fortunate no serious damage was done.

could explain why the mower doesnt mow....

So what does the increaser do and does it speed up the hydraulic pump?
It allows the pump to turn at the proper speed since the PTO turns at 540 rpm, it will increase that speed to about 1000-1100 rpm for the pump.

as i understsnd, it increases 4x but i may be wrong
