PTO SHAFT CUT TO SHORT

This is fine if you live in an area that has one. The closes one to me was 160 miles away. That is where all the dealers send them to in this area

I do not know where joesco, the orig poster, lives. I guess I'll nit pick the 160 miles in your case at Lake City Mich. a little bit. Both Grand Rapids and Saginaw are less than 160 miles from Lake City. There is no place in the entire state of WV (not exactly known for industrial density) that is 160 miles from a nearest shop that could replace a common driveshaft / u-joint section. None of the tractor dealers in your area do local PTO driveshaft repair/replacements ?

Your point is well taken that there might not be a driveline shop real close to joesco, wherever he is.

Nit pick back at you LOL Driveline shop is 130miles located in Grandville Mich on Chcago Drive. I use to live south of there and drove from my location here to there several times a month. Saginaw is 120 miles from me to the north edge and I drive that every 3 months to go to the VA hospital :D

let the drive shaft specialist align & weld or fabricate as they would in automotive applications for which they are set up. that's all i'm saying. if you want to crank up homeowner ingenuity & workmanship/improvisation on something like this, do give it a try.

i prefer on driveshaft problems to let someone qualified to do the work if you know exactly what you want ....how much time do you have in the day? best regards
A driveline shop is 25 minutes from my house, called them this afternoon and was quoted $160.00 to install new tubing, balance and test.

I've seen new ones selling online for less.

Thoughts?

First to compare cars and trucks to farm tractors, their driveshafts in top transmission gear are turning with a 1 to 1 ratio which means at 5,000 engine rpm's means the driveshaft is turning 5,000 rpm's.

Of course diesel engine vehicles are operating at lower speeds than 5,000 rpm but still many times faster rotation than a farm tractor pto shaft.

Farm tractor pto's are turning at 540 rpm.

You don't need to balance tractor pto shafts. The diameter of the pto shaft is a fraction of the long hollow tubing used on rear wheel drive cars and trucks. As a comparison, how many people balance the tire/wheel assembly on a small trailer. Something with a 4.00 x 8 tire. No one. If you have 17" or larger rims and tires on your car balance, becomes critical because the outer edge of the tire is far from the center of rotation.

Do you know what brand your PTO shaft is. If it is a Comer or other worldwide long standing company, you cannot compare it to a product from China.

You need to be dealing with companies who are in the farm machinery business as pto shafts are being shortened or lengthened all the time with a hacksaw and a hammer and punch.

Places that are shortening or altering truck frames need much more attention to detail because of the high rotational speeds of the driveshafts, the outside diameter of the shaft and also the length of some drive shafts.

I had the same job done (new section of shaft, mount into U-joint, etc.) at a shop in/near Weston WV for $60.33 with tax. I agree, you can buy a new one for $160. That's crazy. What part of the country are you in ?

Thanks, Southern New Hampshire.

I went back to check my bills and that $60.33 in my case was PLUS the piece of tubing. Mine had a slip clutch involved which clouded the cost issue. I guess it does not take much jockeying around before you have as much in a pto driveshaft as a total replacement would cost.

Update folks and again thanks for all the input! Yesterday, I took the PTO shaft apart. Most difficult were removing the plastic sleeves.

1. I removed the roll pin from the inner shaft portion and took the shaft to my local Kubota dealer. Much to my surprise he had one in stock. Did not know that most of the "quality" PTO shaft parts are made in Italy! $47.00 later, I have a new shaft and roll pin.

2. Back to the shop, hooked up the chipper and measured the length from the tractor PTO to the chipper's shaft end, 34".

3. Using my cutoff saw, cut the new shaft to length, VERY CAREFULLY, it took 3 cuts to obtain the proper length!

4. Installed the plastic sleeve, the coupler end and the roll pin. Job completed in about a half hour, tested chipper and everything is great for $47.00!

Thanks again guys, you taught me something new and saved me at least $100.00! IMG_20170802_081840.jpgIMG_20170802_081844.jpgIMG_20170802_081850.jpgIMG_20170802_081855.jpgIMG_20170802_092829.jpg

Your shaft is likely a Comer. Youtube has several videos from them.

Great that it worked out.

Now you are the expert for the next guy!!
