Did a search and found good discussion on how far a pto shaft needs to overlap. I liked the idea of 1/3 the length of either end, makes it easy to figure but some people had various thoughts on exact inches. Here's the deal. Traded tractors, old one had a tire footprint of about 48" which meant that my LP 50" tiller was just right. Now I have a 59" tire width print and for a very good reason (money) I wanted to hang on to the LP tiller. (plus it's been a heck of a good machine) The OM says it could be offset only so much. Not being good at math I wasn't so sure but took a stab at it yesterday and moved the clevises (sp?) over 5". Measured the male pto shaft which is 10.5" then hooked it up and have 5.75" exposed which (again, not being good at math) I figured gives me a 4.75" overlap far exceeding the 1/3 rule. Tried it today and everything seems to be OK but my question is, will it stand the test of time? I was and am concerned about the pto shaft running at an angle from the rear but the OM says that as long as it clears all shields and guards then OK. It easily does. We all like pics so will try to add them. p.s.- I know the tiller is not perfectly level, just a trial run. If you look you will see the snow drifts in the background.

Your "Offset" should be just fine. The angle looks like about 5deg or so, and the normal limit is somewhere around 15 deg.

To level just adjust your 3pt arms to the lift point to compensate and you should be good to go!

Looks like spring is right arround the corner for you.

I always hope for the most overlap possible. The more the male/female tubes overlap, the stronger that makes the sliding connection. I don't like 1/3 in rough conditions. Ken Sweet

It is all about torque, (of course).

Not an answer to your question, however I believe people make a mistake with tillers by running them too fast. Running the tiller slow, gets the job done well (for me anyway) and limits the shock load on the tiller and the tractor.

As related to your question, the u joints, shear bolts and the pto shaft will thank you for your consideration.

Talked to dealership today. They say I sould be OK as long as the shaft is greased up (had already cleaned it and put fresh on it) and there is no heat build up. Heat is the first sign of stress, the way I understand it. Thanks all for your replies!:)
