when you unbolt the back cover I think the shaft will pull out, looks like snap ring and a bearing plus the cover is what holds it in place
The Lxx40 WSM states to remove the PTO shaft cover; remove the PTO bearing case mounting bolts and draw out the PTO shaft with the bearing case; remove the internal snap ring; tap out the shaft toward the front. On reassembly, it says to replace the lock nut with a new one if the lock nut was removed and be sure to stake firmly, install the slinger firmly, apply grease to the oil seal and install it noting the proper direction. The lock nut torques to 108 to 145 ft-lb before staking. The bearing case mounting screws torque to 17 to 20 ft-lb.
Bad stub, no diner!
Staking to me means deforming the metal. As an example to stake a nut onto a bolt you deform the metal by raising a burr between the nut and the bolt. An automatic center punch, or regular centerpunch and a hamner. To stake a front sight on a 1911 pistol, you need a staking tool that smashes the sight into the underside of the slide. To stake a spring tunnel, means deforming metal so the part cannot migrate out... So when they say stake a locknut, to me that means raise a burr so it cannot be moved. Others may wish to clarify here.
