I hit a roadblock with the Jinma chipper - the pto shaft isn't long enough (10 - 12 inches) - I'm connecting it to a L5030 Kubota which can accommodate Cat 1 or Cat 2 hookups. I'm not sure what my options are - I know I can buy a different PTO shaft, but wondered if there were other options. Possibly a shaft extender or mounting something that "uses up" the space, and performs something useful - maybe protection in case the chipper jams. Possibly should be adding something like shear pin coupler anyway.
I have an email into the supplier, but anticipate they will say they have only one size shaft.

Is there a good source for PTO shaft - if a new PTO shaft is the only viable way?

You might consider an "over running" coupler or whats also called a "Make Live PTO shaft" it will extend your shaft 4" or so without big $$$$. Go to any tractor dealer or check out ebay Click here

I have an L3130 and thought when I first tried to hook the chipper up that this was a problem I faced but I actually managed to overcome it by resetting the plates that hold the 3ph pins on the chipper further back. See attached sketch. You'll see that the plates are slotted for this very purpose. This has worked fine for me.

Personally I think you're better off starting with a new (and better) shaft.

Have the L2600 and with Pat's hitch it was at the max recommended length -- after about 15 hrs the end of the shaft lierally tore...replaced it with a new sshaft (ordered from Northern tool and then cut it to size).

Love the chipper but some of the components are weak at best.

We have rocky ground and I had the chipper on while movign some brush/trees around with the grapple. At the end of the day the arms that mount to the 3PH (on the chipper) were twisted. Ended up replacing those with heavier steel.

Techj, whether the pto shaft is replaced or not, I'd recommend moving the mounting plates back in their slots to reduce the cantilever on them and so reduce their liability to deform under load.

I had put them all the way back when I first hooked it up -- didn't stop the problem.

Thanks for the pointer to Northern Tool.
Which PTO shaft did you end up buying from Northern Tool? Did it come with any shaft protection? Like shear pins.

Seems like a clutch like a bushhog uses would be a good way to add some length to the existing shaft. However, a little bit more expensive than just going by your local tractor repair shop and buying a longer piece of the existing shaft, coming home, sawing off the old ends and welding in the new ones.
However, choosing the correct length driveshaft to fit your attachment, and buying it already built has it's advantages, also.

TSC has pto shafts in stock.

Also.. as for shaft protection.. you do realize that the shear pins only work in round shaft couplers.. not for spline to spline couplers..

If you lack 12".. no adapter will work good for you... get a longer shaft and cut to fit for safety.

I can't imagine how that works, unless it is an adapter that is installed either before or aftert he pto shaft, and has a bolt thru smooth to smooth coupler for the shear pin...

Could add a slip clutch that way as well..
