PTO

Soundguy, I made a mistake. I have amended my previous post. The standard Cub had a CCW PTO too, but of an oddball size. I apologize for putting out incomplete/wrong information. I should read more, post less. Thanks for the correction.

most people that aren't familiar with all the old ones probably don't know the pecularities.

I have seen brush mowers setup for them cubs, even ones with normal pto size, using an adapter.. just different gearbox setup.

no harm no foul... just pointing out the cub.. as I own one.. :)

So does that mean the answer has changed then or are you guys arguing something else.

Soundguy was correcting my ignorance. The short answer, and what should have been said, is "No, not all tractor PTOs rotate in the same direction."

Follow up information is this: "However, there are only a few models that are exceptions to tractor PTOs rotating clockwise from the rear."

Are you looking at something specific that you're wondering about?

I figured as much but wanted to be sure

The reason I asked is i borrowed a brush mower from a buddy, old thing but will whack down anything up to two inch brush. Went to use it after an ungodly tow home when a bent side panel rubbed a tire into a smoking mess any way I digress. I went to use it and engaged pto throttled up and stared to crawl and it didn't cut squat. So I looked at it and saw a broken shear bolt and wondered if I was turning it the right way and that was what cause the bolt to go. Now in all honesty I may have throttled up before I engaged the PTO it was kinda fuzzy afterwards LOL

Thoughts?

You may be on the right track, but it's kind of strange to me that the shear pin would break unless you had it revved up and dumped the clutch. There is a lot of rotational inertia in the blades, since they are so big, heavy, and travel such a large circumference.

But maybe the shear bolt was already broken, or loose/partly fractured, and you finished it off. If he didn't run it on a Cub, B6000 Kubota or Satoh Beaver it is almost certainly standard clockwise rotation. If it is properly matched to your 4020, those machines probably couldn't even lift it!

Gawd I love this site

Mama thinks I am crazy to spend as much time on here as I do LOL

Maybe you know the answer to this, my 4020 is powershift so my PTO is hydraulically driven. Does the clutch even affect the PTO?:confused2:

The problem and benefit of a forum like this is that whatever is put down will be memorialized. Misinformation like what I said originally stays there, too. There were way too many Cubs sold to ignore them, or say it's an irrelevant relic. They built more of them, I bet, than the Beavers or B6000s, maybe more than both of them combined. The only one I ever was around lacked a 3 point hitch, so I never paid any attention to trying to use it with our PTO attachments.

I was speaking in broadly declarative terms, and was wrong. However I got there, through a mistake, ignorance, or whatever, my statement was incorrect, even though it wasn't at all deliberate or negligent. It's still wrong. Pretty clear-cut. Again, thanks for setting me straight.
