Very good discussion as you describe many scenarios that may or may not happen. Thank you all! The perp was busted less than a year ago for DUI and no insurance and the police keep avoiding our questioning about the insurance. You would think the police would tell you that...wouldn't you?

Ah .... That's a red flag ! Think twice about pulling the Jeep (valuable asset) out for anybody. Losing the Jeep means losing leverage to fix the property damage.

When we had someone hit my parked car and my inlaws fence, the State Trooper who responded gave us a copy of the "exchange of information" sheet which had the drivers name, address and insurance information on it as well as a copy of his insurance card.

Red flag - yes, I would say so. A year ago he had no insurance - - something is starting to get a "ripe" odor. I'll bet this current situation is again - - DUI with no insurance. Two time in a year - - can't be good. That Jeep may be to only thing of any value.

here in new jersey the police don't always provide insurance information on the spot, but it is always included in the police report

Oh oh this could mean no insurance, leave the jeep where it's at and put a trail cam on it. You said he made sure he locked the doors, I wonder what else he is hiding....gun....drugs....body?

This is the same way this is going. Funny, the cop was thinking we would move the vehicle in one or two days. I told him WE are not in a hurry.

Based on this new bit of info, if you have a post hole digger I'd get out there and plant a railroad tie a foot and a half in front and back of it, to keep the asset stationary in case the crooked commissioner (or whomever) decides that it should reside on his damaged property. It sounds like you might have a Boss Hogg / Sheriff Roscoe type situation which means that you have twice as many villains to deal with.
