Wreckers charge a per night storage fee if they remove a vehicle that was improperly parked, right? See what the running rate is in your area and start racking up the bill.

I've heard there's a way to get ownership of abandoned vehicles through DMV?

Some years back a truck was "4 wheeling" in the fall through some fields and got totally mired down. This was a very "farm friendly" area and the farmer said he wouldn't allow anyone on his property to pull it out because of potential damage to the fields. The authorities saw no reason to intervene. In the spring when the farmer was ready to plant he dragged it into the ditch and went about his business. Not sure if this would fly everywhere today.

Sorry you became the victim of a stupid property crime. I guess I would start with a lawyer too but the chances of recovering much from the perp are probably not good. Court ordered restitution, insurance payout, eventually, maybe?

In Ohio the title for a vehicle with an outstanding lien filed against it for repair work or storage could be claimed by the lien holder. Say a person brings their vehicle for repair, can't pay the bill, the vehicle is legally held by the repairer until the bill is paid, and they can add daily storage charges to the bill. It required filing a simple court document to get title and of course takes a while.

If Wisc. has similar laws, that may be something to look into.

How much do you want for your new Jeep? They may as well leave it there, to cover the damages they have done..... there is always the " Jeep?? What Jeep??" way of going about it...Possession is 9/10th's of the law isn't it?

I guess my take on this would be" Nobody touches this vehicle until I am reimbursed for property damages" And then I woulld be generous to myself for the trouble. Idiots learn the hard way.

All the owners of damaged property need to be reimbursed, not just the one where the Jeep died.

The police want us to use our tractor to get it where a wrecker can get it. That means pulling it through the fence again and going 3/4 of a mile across 2 properties, one of which said NO, LET HIM FIGURE IT OUT!. Or, we could pull it up through the woods, hills, and small trails to get it up by the barn and driveway. The tractor is a Case 1390 4x4 with a loader, loaded ag tires.

I told my dad not to touch the jeep until we know OUR liabilities for damage to the vehicle. The guy could say: Yeah, I ran some trees over and through your fence, but you damaged my vehicle more so you owe ME money. (this is just me thinking here) Also, why would we do all this work with out being paid for it?

Well, my parents are getting damage estimates and getting the police report and talking with insurance office. What kind of lawyer should they look for to help them with decisions? Could they just say: It's your problem to figure out how to get the jeep out of there?

When the Police asked you to use your tractor to get it out you should have asked who to send your bill to. Or you could bill the towing company to get it out where they can hook to it and let them add your recovery fee to their bill to the customer. It's on your land so only you have the right to let anyone on there to retrieve it. You shouldn't have to tow it out for the police for free. Don't forget to also submit your bill for the damage they caused to your land and trees.

If the vehicle is insured for property damage, I wonder if the fact it was being used for illegal purposes at the time the damage occurred is an exception reason stated in the policy for not paying?

Confiscate it, charge an impound fee and towing, then add for tree damage per foot of tree plus fence destroyed and ANY other damage. Be prepared to itemize and talk to X-mas tree growers, tow truck co., and fence companies to make everything as it was. I think by that time you will own the jeep.
