Best thing to have is another person to help you line up the tractor. Without such, you'll likely have to get on and off the tractor to move it a few times while lining things up. Not sure about moving the tractor much with the brakes on - mine is darn hard to move with the brake engaged (I tried a crowbar under a rear wheel, and maybe got an inch), and also not sure about leaving the tractor on (maybe a geared unit, but the hydro stuff can be a bit squirrelly, and I wouldn't want to get flattened). The point about putting on the adjustable link side first is right on. Sometimes, however, such as with my 1100 lb brush cutter, it is just a time consuming and strenuous task - my "weapons of persuasion" are a 6' crowbar and sledge hammer (as per a prior post - do not, not, kick a recalcitrant hitch when you become frustrated - [censored] near broke a toe last weekend). When I can afford a barn with a flat concrete floor, I'll make the dollies for each implement that so many in this forum swear by - right now I just have to envy them, and park my implements outside, on concrete blocks.
