I am wanting to build a 20x40 concrete pad 4" with a metal roof only, no sides. What kind of foooting do I need around the peremiter? 12"X12", 18"x18"?

I am in east Texas so no frost/freeze. Does anyone here know?

Thanks,
Rick

It's a hard sand, not red sand the yellow sand. Loose sand will get very hard here after a good rain. So sand/clay.

With "no sides" on your structure all the weight will be bearing on your posts, right? If that be the case, you do not need a perimeter footer.

Posts in the ground or on the slab?

The footing size would be determined by the loading.:D

What kind of soil? Compacted or loose?

It should depend on the two above. I just poured a 12ft X 28ft foundation a couple of weeks ago and we went 18 inches wide based on the soil and building load.

Just curious, what is the slab inside the one end of the footing for?

After we framed the out side foundation we decided to make an 8ft X 12ft room, so the pad is that area. We will fill in the three side to make it solid to the outside foundation. We had to leave the 6 inch gap to get the framing wood out. It's called hindsight.

Rick, If I were you I would call your local concrete company and tell them what you intend to use it for and then ask them about the type footers you need , I am assuming there is no building permit required and no building code office..but if there is , then you could call your local code office and ask them what the code is ...if you are going to permit it...:)

Rick for the type of structure you want the easiest thing to do is build it like a pole barn. Set your poles, build your roof and then come in and pour a slab. The slab will be a floating or sometimes called an Alaskan slab. Along the edges you dig a trench, in this case 8 or 10" deep would be enough, that slopes at 45 degrees to the main body of the floor.
