question about shuttle shift and changing gears

I have noticed that when SS is n rev or forward and try to change 1-4 gears, sometimes main gearshift lever has a hard to going into gear. But when shuttle lever is in neutral it does not. I know shuttle shift is made to go from rev to forward without having to change main gear shift lever but is it bad to change main gear lever with shuttle shift lever not being in neutral? And yes I always use clutch and lower rpms. thanks

You need to find out if you have a syncro-mesh Transmission. I have 2 tractors, one is syncro on all 4 gears and I can shift freely between gears while moving. The other is syncro between 3rd and 4th only. Shifting into 1st or second I need to be stopped and goes better when the F/N/R lever is in the neutral position. Some transmission are non-syncro in all gears.

I think I've only stepped on the clutch pedal a half-dozen times in the last 10 years on my L4200GST. My only caveat is I put the shuttle in neutral and hit the brakes and try to come to a stop before changing direction. Short of that, I hard shift through all gears and forward and back, and do it at full throttle. I believe my tractor engages the hydraulic clutch when shifting gears too, but I'm not positive about that.
