I used to feel this way. But my opinion on ad's for "free' forums has changed over the last few years. It costs money to run a forum, and advertising pays for our free privilege. More so now since we have now generated an ad and my wife's company is small, very rural and she only has two agents working for her. The cost of advertising is pretty large for a small company, and we thought(think) TBN's fee was reasonable. I am kinda the "tech guy" her, but don't tell her I am learning new stuff every day....this internet education is exhausting.

Do banner ads not seem like a goofy way to advertise?
I understand it takes money to run a site like this but does anyone actually pay attention to a banner add? I just tune them out. The more annoying... the less of a chance I will visit the site. When I'm in the middle of nowhere I hit up local bulletin boards in diners/convenience stores or word of mouth. Word of mouth is why I cruise forums in the first place. I can quickly gather opinions/experiences from people that traveled that road. The company I work for wastes massive money on tv, Internet, and newspaper advertising. My neighbor does real estate and auction services has grown exponentially. I noticed him painting and adding logos to some really nice carts the other day. Curiosity overcame me do i inquired. He picked them up at one of his auctions did some work to them and was going to take them around giving them out to nursing homes for luggage carts. Now that is sharp. Funny thing is I remember the owner of our company bragging about the big six figure advertising campaigns one year. That was also the last year had a Christmas party too lol. Sure it got us business, but dollar for dollar I guarantee my neighbors low tech low dollar grassroots approach outperformed ours.

Just 3 google word ads on one page (just word ads, no banners) made $33 a mouth from only 8 distict users a month.. So ya, they can make money

I run Firefox and yes I can see the banner ads. As long as they are not flashing in my face, I'm ok with them.
I pay no attention whatsoever to the national ads like Verizon or whatever bank is being promoted, but local companies, you bet.

Goofy...well, in my opinion, yes for certain things. For example, I see AT&T advertising here on a banner, top and side which is very pricey. I have to wonder if anyone ever looks at their ad and goes
duh4.gif
" I never thought about At&T!"

But for our real estate I think a national ad to a targeted audience is beneficial. Unless you have been searching for quite some time for rural property, odds are that you have never heard of Hancock County Tennessee. Back in 2001 I found it by accident when looking at a tract of land here, but I had no info on the County until I did my own research. Many folks are trying to get away from the larger cities and be somewhat self sufficient. They are also trying to escape excessive taxes(especially in the NE), overzealous code enforcement, high property costs, the list goes on an on. We think our County is unique in that it is remote, almost zero industry, which make it a prime candidate for Retirees like myself. So reaching out with a banner ad here to catch the eye of someone about to make a change in permanent location makes sense to us.

Sy, I think you were right, since I have turned on the ad's here I see ads for things I have recently looked at....I am being tracked. I don't think any of us like being tracked by advertisement stalkers, and the only way to stop that is to block them. Then they are still stalking us, we just can't see them. Like it or not we all leave footprints all over the internet highway every time we log on.

Thanks Brin...I wish I knew how to set up a poll.

I see polls here every now and then, maybe 2 or 3 a year. It's just a guess, but probably just a moderator has the ability to set up a poll. Hopefully someone "in the know" will talk about it.

That is what Muhammad told me back when we had the EA poll going on. So, if you want a poll, start a thread then "report" it or PM one of the mods and ask that they add a poll.

There is something in my computer that makes the back button useless for all the ads that get loaded.
AND there is something that continually keeps clicking on the ads so somebody is really getting overcharged for their ads!!!

This has been driving me crazy for just about a month now. I never said anything because I thought it was just my computer doing something strange.

Is there any fix???

Use Firefox or Chrome instead of IE.

That's actually a workaround, not a fix. The fix is to complain loud enough to places they quit running doubleclick and similar on their sites... I like all the content on a page to come from the server I chose to visit, not having parts of the page pimped out to third party advertising firms.
