Question on DK45SE HST 50-hour Service

There have been a few folks who have accomplished the hydraulic filter removal with a strap wrench- but not many. Maybe you will be the third or fourth.

I removed the hydraulic filter on my gear (not hydrostat) tranny DK45S with a strap wrench for the 400 hour service. The trick was to clean the outside of the filter first and remove all dirt so the strap can get a grip. Otherwise it just slid on the dusty dirt film.

It's not rubberized, but that's a good idea. I could spread a little left over silicone sealant on the strap to make it grip better. If that doesn't work I could always just run some screws through the strap into the filter. I'm not above doing that.

I wonder if cleaning the filter with some rubbing alcohol wouldn't help getting a grip. Getting all chance of oil and grime off of that filter and making it squeaky clean.

I also tried that to no avail.

Seems to me ... after all the pondering and hemhawing, it would just be simpler to buy the chain wrench. Just sayin' :)

I used the channel lock style filter wrench with no problems on my first 50 hour service.

+1 (for third time!) for the Channellock filter wrench. I have the 12" (range 2 3/8" to 4 1/2") which fits all the filters on my DK35 HST. There are also 15.5" and 9" models. For me it is handier than a strap wrench but I don't how it compares to a chain wrench(never used one). After breaking my strap wrench I went with the Channellock pliers because it had high ratings on the Amazon and Canadian Tire sites.

I have been using the channel lock style wrench for years now on everything. It hasn't let me down and is much more user friendly than the chain style. I have a full set of chain, strap and socket type filter wrench sets but it seems I don't need anything but the channel lock style.

I will go ahead and pick up a set of the Channellocks just to have in the tool box. Looks like I could use them for other filters I have to change also.
