I wouldn't be sorry, you are correct. No self respecting logger would use one of those things.
The wooden wheel has been around infinitely longer than log arches, but no self respecting truck driver would use wooden wheels.

That's what I meant, that one on ebay. What weight capability does it have on how steep a grade? I don't think that thing would last a day in the Pa. woods.

How about the auction number... not a Link, just the auction number, so we can see what is being discussed here? :)

For a better one see item number 150079499736 --Not that it is a true arch it is still a skidder arch of sorts. Or one for an ATV item number 130090445549 --which is pretty rinky-dink and for the really bad contraption -- 260191269752 --which I believe will not go the distance.

This is a good looking arch for a small tractor.

The Logging arch is a useful and productive tool, but it must be properly constructed and used carefully.

The site with the pictures has many different sized arches and nice pictures.

I have to say, I don't think I've ever seen a logging arch in use around here... just in pictures on the internet. I like it that they keep the log off of the ground and out of the mud/dirt for the most part.

And that picture reminds me, I've got 3 red oak logs about that size laying down in my woods that needs to be bucked and split and hauled out... if it would ever quit raining. But, let it rain, we need the rain much worse than I need that wood!

The log arch just won't fit in my woods, I'd spend more time with it stuck than I would dragging out wood. I've come up with this and it works for me.

Toad,

Do you use tongs or just wrap the chain around the log?

My Dad just got a set of logging tongs, and I'm thinking he's going to need something like that to make efficient use of them... Right now he's only got the drawbar that goes between the lower arms of the 3PH...

Neither of us has ever used tongs before, so we're going to find out the hard way what works and what doesn't...

I don't use tongs, just the chain, I wrap the slip hook around the log, raise the unit just high enough to get one end off the ground and away I go. If I'm hooking on small logs, I'll use both ends of the chain to haul 2 pieces.

Toadhill,

Seems to me that you are pulling from pretty high up. If that log should snag on a stump or something then you could be doing a wheelie pretty quickly. Do be careful!

The log arch pictures do show how they are using the log tongs. They even use it to pick the entire log off the ground using the leverage of the arch. There are several advantages to the arch, 1. you do not drag the log and therefore do not collect the embedded dirt (tough on saws), 2. You pull from the draw bar, less likely to generate a wheelie, 3. the rolling wheels will do less damage to the terrain, and a built in protection for the tractor operator from a "runaway log."

Rather then use a slip hook or a grab hook on your chains this is the hook to use for skidding wood. They make them for 1/4 and 5/16" chain.

McPeterson: I just don't have room for a log arch in the woods. When I pull I use low range 2nd or 3rd gear until I get to the trails. The center of gravity of the log isn't any higher than the drawbar.
