Questions to self employed people

Wingnut,

Thanks for pulling all this together. I often tell folks some of these very same things. Will be printing this post to ponder further as I'm in my cell, eh, I mean my cubicle as I count down the years and months I have to serve prior to my parole. /w3tcompact/icons/grin.gif

Oh, yeah, I forget your emergencies are emergencies!
I, on the other hand, get to deal mostly with "wish lists". As in, "I wish you would treat this as an emergency." (Usually the word "want " is substituted for "wish".) Events lately have made me tell them that if no one is bleeding from the ears, it ain't an emergency. Surprisingly, most of them have accepted it. Makes me wonder how many years I've been going nuts for nothing.

I am beginning to think self- (un)employment also! Ever been told when you ask how you are doing? are you meeting expectations? or in those so called reviews that you are things like "wonderful", "the best", the "cream", the old you are our "top man", or "we cannot do without you"??????--well---that is about when you should start looking for another job.
Oh, no one will ever remember saying or giving those positive descriptions--trust me.
Integrity and honor and truth are characterisitics that are sorely lacking out there.

Meeting expections - what a bunch of crap.

Say what you mean - you are doing you job!! /w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif

I'm very much of the opinion of using plain-speak. Alas... nevermore.... /w3tcompact/icons/crazy.gif

JR -- This is just all DilbertSpeak for managers who are simply doing what they're trained to do. Don't take any of these comments seriously nor should you let them overly inflate your opinion of yourself. Only you know what you did and are capable of doing. You alone are the judge.

Good one I experienced recently was how I was turned down for a job transfer because I was told "I'm too important in my current job position and I will have very important task assignments that I'll be working on." This was about a year ago. In reality, my downtime outweighs real work time and I'm still waiting for those "...important task assignments..." /w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif

I guess I have to consider continuing to NOT be self employed for a while yet ... last years bonuses for extra work, and other successes totalled over $35k ... and now the boss just walked in to apologize for only managing to get me a little better than double to average raise this year ... with the economy like it is ... 3.35% sounds pretty good to me.

I want to thank you guys for all the insightful information. You gave me so much to think about, it is difficult for me to make individual replies. How can I reply when I haven't figured out these things yet in my own mind?

Just want you to know that I have read every post carefully.

Buck,
I'm in a similar situation as you and am currently employed by a governmental agency. Fortunately I can "retire" in 3 more years and my pension will be 50% of my current salary. At that time I intend to buy an existing business or franchise as I don't mind the risk when I get reward too. Have wanted to be self employed since I was 16 and will soon get the opportunity!! With my pension situation I have the luxury of taking some risk. Being in government you realize that no matter how high you go you always answer to someone higher and then you answer to the people and public opinion!! 20 years is enough!! Best of luck in your endeavors - I'll be jumping in right behind you (but not QUITE yet!!!)
