R4's on Grass

/ R4's on Grass #21
6 yrs mowing with loaded R4's, no problems.

I find 4wd is better, in 2wd the backs will spin on a hill, but not in 4wd.

Hi All,
I having been talking to people a lot of people about R4's....... And the main thing is how gentle they are on grass. I believe that they are gentle enough for finish mowing and do not rip up grass. Almost all the people that i talked to said they rip up grass. Is that true or are they think of R1's????

As you can see from the replies, you really can't overgeneralize something like this... it really depends on circumstances. For example, R4's on a little tractor like a BX usually won't take huge divots, but R4's on a Grand L are a whole different matter... if the ground is soft, you'll leave ruts and tread marks anywhere you go... maybe not as much as R1's, but it will still be noticed. Been there, done that with both sizes of tractors.

And it depends on what you consider to be your "grass". If your place could be mistaken for a fairway at the country club, you're probably not going like running anything with R1's or R4's over the lawn. But if you keep things mowed but use a rough cut bush hog type mower like I do (think pastures, orchards, etc.), a few scrapes, ruts and clumps only add to the character of the place.

Coincidentally, I just spent two hours this evening giving 4 acres its first mowing of the season with the L and a 6' Befco rotary cutter. FEL removed, 2wd and cruise control with the brake pedals unlinked so I can do brake turns (you know, the kind people say you can't do with a Kubota HST tractor :confused2:). Worked great but the R4's on wet grass left a nice 1/2 donut mark in the field at each pivot turn, which will probably be unnoticeable by the next mowing. Been doing it like this for 8 years now.

The R4's can be OK on a highly finished lawn depending on: a) if the ground is basically dry when you mow, b) if you're using a lighter tractor, c) if you don't need 4wd for safety on slopes or whatever and d) if you operate the equipment with a gentle touch.

R4s on the BX25 w/ backhoe and FEL don't treat my grass well at all, and if it's wet, forget it. I want to get a smaller BX w/ turfs for mowing, and I think I'd like to replace the R4s with R1s on the BX25. I find the R4s don't do all that well in dirt and mud when digging with front or back end. It's like the R4s are trying to be all things to all people and not doing any one thing especially well.

I think you hit the nail on the head. They're good in most situations, but no one tire will do everything perfectly, or else that's all that would be available since no one would sell (or buy !) anything else.

On 2wd and 4wd braking: I can say I've got car/truck syndrome. My brain still thinks I have 4 wheels equipped with brakes, it's only once the rear end is sliding that I realize that not only do I NOT have ABS, but I've only got REAR brakes.

Usually I notice this sliding down the driveway towards the road, heading for a ditch, or wishing I'd planned to stop a lot earlier in general.

I occasionally travel on paved road for a bit, I've got in the habit of knocking 4wd off just before I start moving on the pavement. Other than that, unless I'm on bone dry level ground, it stays in 4wd.

I mow my 3 acres with my 3940 and loaded R4 tires. I leave the loader mounted but usually take off the bucket for cooling and visibility. The only issue I have is making turns on the hill. Otherwise I don't have any issues.

I agree. No turning when 4WD is engaged either. Soft ground can leave a tire imprint, but it seems to rebound and not leave any lasting imprint.

I have R4's on my 3940 and mow with the MMM and have no problems turfing up the yard. Like others have said as long as it is fairly dry and not using the 4wd i don't really think there is a problem with them. They are nicer than turf tires when doing other things with the tractor ie. plowing the garden, loader work and bush hoggind they resist puctures a little better than turf tires IMO
