Ram1500 EcoDiesel V6 revealed!

I found this interesting. Build a ford base model crew cab 6'4 bed 4x4 with the Eco boost. And do the same with the ram and the new 3.0 eco diesel. The ram is cheaper. So the upfront cost everyone is complaining about isn't there.

The upfront cost people are discussing is the difference between the diesel and the hemi. It is $2850 addition and is it worth the additional cost for a lower performance engine?

I just did the same thing with an SLT Ram crew against an XLT f150 supercrew and the Ram was $975 higher. Too many variables to compare two makes apples to apples. The Ram is much less capable with muck less room in the back seat even if the money were equal. These numbers are MSRP not considering current rebates. I will bet there are not going to be as attractive rebates for the new engine choice unless they don't fly off the lots like some believe.

I just got this in my inbox this morning. Thought you folks might enjoy it. There's also a writeup on the Cummins/Nissan relationship in the same issue. Pro Pickup - December 2013

Thanks for posting that RD.

(Big pdf, best downloaded and read off-line, unless you've got a pretty fast PC).

While I'm never likely to be confused with a Chrysler fanboy, I applaud what they are doing - bringing more choice to the market.

In this part of Canada, while diesel and gas tend to move in different price cycles, diesel fuel is often near or even below gas in price. Any further discussion of the artificially distorted conditions in the USA market belongs in another forum (Politics).

If you want to buy Gas engined vehicles, go ahead.

If you need to tow 15,000# plus, buy a 1 ton.

If you have any appreciation for the ability of diesels, wish Chrysler good luck in the market with this vehicle - their success with a non-1ton diesel will help build a larger market here for diesels in general.

MBAs tend to use bigger words, but a lot of business decisions come down to not much more that "Monkey see, monkey do", when it comes to making money.

Why does the FACT that diesel fuel costs more than gas here in the US (30% higher by me) belong in a political forum? It's a fact and a way of life!

That differential was caused by a taxation strategy implemented by your elected representatives.

Sorry.... as a Canadian, I have a Phd in Taxation-Induced-Blood-Pressure-Management, so I can relate !

Didn't really want to go down that road, but I get tired of polly tics derailing good technical solutions.

No, it is not. Diesel carries a $0.06/gallon tax penalty (.244 vs .184). Where does the other $0.54 differential come from? Hint: it isn't taxes.

So, the price differential is REAL for us in The States, no matter how the cost difference is achieved, so it's valid when discussing diesel vehicles for sale in the US.

Didn't really want to go down that road, but I get tired of polly tics derailing good technical solutions.

Then why did you derail with your factually incorrect political statement?

Got "tired of politics derailing good technical solutions" so you decided to bring up politics and post what appears to be false information. What publications are you reading up there in Canada to support your theory?

I am just seeing about a $.05/gallon tax differential US average.

Diesel Fuel Taxes - Compare Taxes On Diesel Fuel In All 50 States

You're not going to like my answer.... It's been a while since I looked at your gasoline taxes, those are currently taxed higher than I realized. Thank you for correcting my perception.

Went looking for current diesel tax info (gas is lower down on that page too). I expected some variation State to State, but it's a bit wider than I would have guessed.
