Avoid the US. The first thing they will look at is what you are registered for. Exceed that and you are going to pay no matter what your truck is rated for. The next will be the weight ratings on your tires. Since anyone can upgrade the suspension and brakes the door sticker means little to the DMV.
Good point. I think the biggest thing in the US is what the truck is licensed for. If you are licensed for 12k and you are grossing out at 13k, you are overweight, no matter what the manufacturer rates your truck at. Non-commercially, I doubt any ratings are ever looked at with the exception of the rating on the license.
However, with the sue-happy society we live in, those ratings on the door and tires could come into play and cost you greatly if you caused an accident and you were over on any one of those ratings.
