Ram1500 EcoDiesel V6 revealed!

Let face it, the average person buys a truck, he and his family of 2 kids and wife go camping. Does they guy make his family step on the scales, does he weigh all his equipment? Of course not. If he is driving a Ram 1500 is he over weight? Probably. Go to the thread titled people hauling stuff wrong. Does anybody really worry about the family guy that is 150 lbs over the weight of his Ram? Lets just say I'm not. I see to many people running around with out trailer lights, loads not secured correctly to worry about the guy that's 150 lbs overweight. This is a non issue for the average consumer.

One thing I give TBN credit for is me is learning this stuff, what's safe and what isn't. At least it makes me aware of it. I've overloaded my truck before and probably will again and never really felt unsafe, I just felt it was hard on the truck.

Does or Should?

I must not be the average guy because I did consider this when shopping and did weigh my equipment for my truck two years ago. My first choice was a Ram because I had good service from my previous Dakota. It wasn't possible to purchase one due to the lower payload ratings in the crew cab configuration. I guess you are implying that since everyone disregards limits then it is ok. I guess I care about my family more than the average guy then. Yes I did go to the scales and recommend EVERYONE know what they are hauling when the family is riding along. http://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/projects/237522-popup-camper-conversion-toyhauler.html

I 100% agree that TBN is a great source of information and google sends many folks that own no tractors to threads like this for valuable information. I am not worried about 150 lbs. I am just wanting to warn those who immediately think "Diesel 1500 truck, that will make a great vehicle for my family to use to haul our camper" that they had better check the payload and become educated in what they need. One of these unededcated buyers will inevitablly order one of these trucks for that purpose thinking it must be capable because it is a diesel, take delivery, and realize their payload is 1000 lbs and they cant even haul a popup camper let alone their 6000 lb ultralight. Hopefully Ram will bring back the max payload option so that people can use this engine to its potential.

Dude give it a rest. You must be an engineer i'm guessing.
No and Yes

I guess I am not going to get a thank-you teaching you the true payload of your specific truck. You originally thought it was 1510 lbs when your door sticker specificly says 1256. You are that average guy that dodge man mentions that I hope to help. Some are more accepting.

I'm not saying its correct to go around over weight, I'm just saying the average Joe doesn't have a clue.

Apparently I'm not the average guy either. I did compare capabilities, and which brands and models had the most capacity. I bought a F150 Lariat Super Crew 6 1/2' bed with a lot of options. It's a complete pig as far as trucks go. Has to be one of the heaviest configurations available, just like the Ram 4 doors with the heavy engines. The difference is I opted for the brand/model that I could also get the HD payload package. That got me heavier springs all the way around, thicker frame, better tranny coolers, LT tires, etc etc, and it still rides as smooth as many cars. I can carry a cab full of family, friends, and/or camping gear, plus fill the bed, and not have the ***** sag like some others. I have over 2100 lbs of payload capacity on mine. I love this truck, but I also understand not everyone cares about hauling things in their truck.

I must not be average either. I look at GVWR, GCWR, payload, tow capacity, and where torque is made.

If you're worried about GVWR, etc.. or you're paying extra for a thicker frame, stiffer springs, etc.. that's why 2500's and 3500 are made.
It's an all too easy line to cross on forums, putting down a competitor, while boasting you need/want the features of a different machine. apples to oranges.

Different strokes for different folks. Cannot get an ecoboost in an f250 and when you offer 6 seats, many would like to place bodies in them.

Do you think it is necessary for a family of 4 to have to purchase an 3/4 ton to tow a pop up camper with a few pieces of firewood and a couple bicycles?

I have a 3500 also but it has its place. Mine stays parked until my load exceeds 10,000#

One of my first cars was a '69 caddy with the 472 4 barrel. Heck, I bet I could put 1000 lbs in that trunk!

He has a valid point. Let's say you want to go camping with a family of 5 (I will use my family as an example). The weight of my wife, my 3 kids, my dog, and the kids car seats comes up to about 550 lbs. With 1256 lbs of payload, that leaves you about 700 lbs of payload. Say I want to take some firewood, maybe 250 lbs worth. Maybe a cooler full of beverages and ice at 50 lbs. Now, I'm down to 400 lbs of payload. So, I want a bumper pull travel trailer, so now I have 100 lbs worth of hitch and sway control. That leaves me with 300 lbs of payload. My last bumper pull trailer was an ultralite with 400 lbs of tongue weight...empty. I couldn't even tow that with the payload on your Ram.

This isn't a knock on the Ram, just stating facts.

Do you have a problem with engineers? Just because they are typically sticklers for details? Details that can mean the difference between a product performing as planned or failing and injuring or killing many people.

PS: I have an engineering degree as well, in case you are wondering.
