Ram1500 EcoDiesel V6 revealed!

It doesn't have the right air suspension. The one on the 1500 is for ride not hauling or towing. This is proven by the payload and towing being less on all the air bag equipped 1500's. They have a great power train a great interior. Now they need to redesign or address the payload and towing of the 1500's. They just got done making major changes to the HD lineup. If ram would improve the payload and towing of the 1500 there is not a half ton that could touch them right now. However saying that I would not go the route of the F150. Over 10,000 lbs towing on a half ton is too much. Just give the ram 1500 a good payload a tow rating of 10,000 lbs and you're set. This is in another thread but when the big 3 adopt the standards for tow ratings I think the f150's rating will drop quite a bit.

So, basically, you are saying that it isn't built for towing or hauling. You know, what a pickup should be built for. Gotcha! I don't think you need 10k lb. tow ratings in a half ton, but you should at least have a "half ton" of payload.

As far as there not being a half ton to touch the Ram, I think that's stretching a bit. Sure, Ram is a nice truck, and it has improved greatly in the last few years, but to say that it is leaps and bounds ahead of the rest is a bit of exaggeration. I think all of the Big 3's half tons are pretty good offerings, and are really close right now, with the Ram maybe being a bit ahead in ride and interior material quality. The thing is, the current F150 is on it's way out, and the '15 will outclass the rest of the competition by a wide margin.

And, I'd bet you lunch that the F150's tow ratings don't drop at all when they adopt the tow standards for '15. If anything, the numbers on the F150 will go up, guaranteed (engine to engine with '14)! The 2.7L will probably tow around 7500 or so, but the numbers of the 5.0 and 3.5 will go up.

Who is they all? I know for a fact the F150, Tundra, and Titan all have enough.

Not sure about GM, don't pay any attention. Ram is the only ones with this issue.

Chris

Well, I backtrack on that statement a bit. I would say 3-4 years ago, they all did it (all of the half tons). However, now Ford does have the payload to support it after the updates for '13+. I haven't looked at the Titan and Tundra lately.

They all claim towing capabilities that payload can't support.

All trucks make their towing claims with the phrase "properly equipped". Ram is the only current model that takes that phrase to a whole new level. Their "properly equipped" model must not contain a single option. Wonder if it even comes with paint or decals. Other manufacturers allow for more cushion to allow claimed capacities with passengers and decent option packages. For example, my well equipped supercrew F150 has a payload capacity of 1835 lbs and a towing capacity of 11,300 pounds. It doesn't even have the max payload option that would add another 450 lbs. Plenty of cushion to fill the cab with people and tow the limit though I wouldn't advise on doing so. Not touting the ford but I am just am familiar with it and believe the other makes also have more cushion.

If my math is right off the top of my head the driver in your truck would have to be 140 lbs to fall in the 15% tongue weight for 11,300 lbs. I know the ram is a long ways from that but they all fudge the numbers some. Like I said I think ram will up there towing and payload in the next few years.

The 15 F150 must have changed everything then. Because the ford interior isn't even in the same class as the ram. I've owned fords my whole life and still on several. I started switching to ram after having problem after problem after problem with the fords. Dealing with a problem on one of them now actually. Ford stopped standing behind there product in my opinion and I'm not the only one that thinks so. We all like the brand we like because we get good service from them. I have had little to no issue with any of my rams since I started using them so I stand by them for now. If they drop the ball and I start having issues with them like I did and do with the fords I have then I will look for another option. We'll let me rephrase that if I have issues and they don't stand behind there product like I experienced time and again with ford. Saying all if this I am not happy with the current payload and towing of the 1500 ram but it's a non issue for me as I don't use half tons.

The '15 F150 is all new. Aluminum body panels, cab, bed, etc. shaving 700 lbs off the weight of a crew cab, new 2.7L EcoBoost V6, new interior, new everything.

And I understand your point. I have had nothing but good luck with Ford. The issues that I have had, Ford stood behind them and fixed them. I have no reason to switch, and IMO, Ford has the best ergonomically laid out interior of all the pickups. The Ram has better materials, I will give it that, but as far as ergonomics go, I haven't met a Ford I didn't like. I have been in several other makes that I just couldn't get comfortable in though.

We can all debate the explanation of the "strange" low payload rating, but I'm still betting Ram will sell as many of these diesel 1/2 tons as they can manufacture.

Exactly to each their own. That is why we have a free market and choices. I have to say as much as I like the rams I have I would not buy a 1500 until they raise the towing and payload if I was in the market for a half ton. Now the jeep grand with the Eco diesel that does interest me but have no need for one right now.

I was just reading about fords new redesign of the F150 using a lot of beer cans. They hope the decrease of 700 lb's will improve mileage, but they really want to add that 700# to the advertised payload #'s. I was reading that basic repairs will be costly and require specially trained shops.

Or 705 lbs if you use the 10% industry standard used by manufacturers.
