Well we treated our diesel the best we could. Changed oil only with Mobil 1

The egr valve let too much crap back in the engine. Spun the bearing in the number 2 cylinder and pit the piston into the head. On my dads jeep did it on the number 1 cylinder.

What I can tell you is this.... Chrysler never ordered a rebuild kit of any kind. You have to buy all parts individually. As soon as they declared bankruptcy they stopped ordering parts. I have had very little luck through their network to find any parts. Some piece meal but that's it. MV won't sell to me or my business.

The website posted has 2.4s for sale but not 2.8s that I saw. I have found a shop in england that I can order parts from. That's the best I have. Found. I am not perfect nor the best online searcher. If someone can help great my wife would send you homemade cookies forever!

2 for 2 - OUCH !

EGR on a diesel can be a PITA. I saw a seriously messed up (blowing black like a diesel sled puller) late model Jetta not long ago, that was totally stock. Bad EGR in that case too. Not fun to diagnose, either.

By Mobil 1, I expect you mean Turbo Diesel Truck flavour, or do those engines need a Euro spec oil ?

HEY GUYS - Homemade cookies for life ! <<<<< I'd expect parts to be delivered already !

Best of luck, I hope you can find an affordable part source soon.

The first link was used motors only....which are simply ticking time bombs, and the second is for export only if they had the parts available. I have a block, and I have a crank...its all other parts that are needed.

Sounds like you need to look into a EGR Delete kit if you ever get them going.

the standard for oil specs is SAE SAE International - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia for viscosity and API American Petroleum Institute - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia for quality specifications. both organisations are US based, there are no European specifications. just manufacturers create their own specifications which translate directly to SAE and API standards to get end users buy oil at their dealers, instead of mainstream fuel and lube shops.

Fortunately I drive vehicles old enough that I don't have to worry about these new oil games. Yet.

I think there is a mix of business factors and technical issues at play. That's a bad mix, as it can cause people who don't pay much attention to oil to begin with to decide "Yeah, whatever, let's just dump in what's on sale".

VW has had problems with cams here, at least on diesels. To what extent oil plays a factor, I don't really know. Even the gas Euro cars we get here are a different beast - larger sumps and longer OCI than is typical for other gas vehicles sold here.

If I had a newish vehicle, Euro or not, I'd be checking for the lowest cost aftermarket motor oil that met Manufacturer's specs. To do otherwise could 1) void your warranty and/or 2) cause expensive wear.

To be fair, sometimes the OEM has spec motor oil at a reasonable price. I have the impression that Toyota's OEM oil is well regarded in terms of $ vs. performance.

I never like getting gamed by the Marketing guys; unfortunately the potential cost of ignoring these specs can be really high. That too could well be part of the Marketing plan....

Well, ever since Daimler wrecked Chrysler & they filed for bankruptcy, Fiat saved them so Fiat gets to dictate. That's why you don't see a Cummins 4 cylinder in the half ton pickups. In fact, Cummins was afraid of losing the heavy duty pickup account at first.

So the wonderful world of global finances has produced this poor marriage. And we still wait for a good half ton diesel combo. Ridiculous.

Yep, we all know the Golden Rule.

Them that's got the gold, make the rules.

Wish I had all the time/skills/$/energy/facilities needed to do the custom diesel conversions that I'd like to.
